I don't mean the music doesn't get the crowd but the DJ him/herself doesn't get the crowd going when using lappys.

As for PvD, I've seen more charisma in a sausage roll.

...

How many laptop DJs have you seen?

I actually agree with agentdansmith. I saw PVD once and wasn't thrilled at all. Most of his tracks lacked any coherent melodies. His crowd interaction blows too - he just kept staring at his laptop all the time. He just couldn't create a vibe, compared to AVB and Ferry.

That doesn't sound anything like PVD when he plays in LA.

His ability to do live mashups, remixes, edits, etc is exceptional ATM. He is creative and pusing the latest greatest technology... isn't that what DJing is all about? To whoever says he has no energy in his laptop sets has not seen a proper laptop set from him...

might be the fact that the lappy I used for that was a dual-core beast lol

Possibly both are able to perform on their own - so if one laptop dies he's got another, with complete setup, to fall back on.

Redundancy!

Nem, what an honour. I've met PvD loads of times, he's the nicest guy in the world. All this shit about him not having much charisma, i agree he's no coke snorting self centred nonce, he's a true DJ, he lets the music speak for itself. The man IS the finest DJ in the world, IMO.

but surely if he was that good, all his "laptop sets" would be proper and project the energy to the audience?

All laptop dj's have to spend so much time staring at their screens that they don't have the time to interact with the crowd.

Please prove me wrong if you know anyone who does....

I don't think rocking the crowd has got anything to do with whether it's a laptop set or not - PVD's never really been one to jump around and look like he's getting into it when he's playing, even when he was back on vinyl. And unfortunately it seems that it's the quieter DJs who have taken up Ableton... although as the picture above shows, Carl Cox integrates it now and I'm sure his sets don't have any less energy with a laptop involved simply because he's Carl Cox - the man will have energy everywhere he goes, no matter what he's playing on.

And incidentally, I've seen PVD play some awesome laptop sets which really got the crowd going, but I agree the one thing missing was a bit of interaction.
