 Thnx for all the suggestions, Ive been slowly browsing through whats being recommended.. PETRAN's post is pretty immense so it will take time to investigate all those lol, especially since a lot of them are older, but my first impressions are:
first of all it seems Im not the only Balance 10 freak... 3 tracks named here including my sample of 'FSOL - Study of Six Guitars' are
featured on that great compilation.. CD1 of that and CD1 of GU24 = my fav downtempo mixes from bigger name dj cds, some insane transitions and track selection
a lot of really amazing guitar ambient/lofi style tracks mentioned here, though most are chilout and happy mooded rather than dark and medieval sounding, also a few tracks mentioned here fit more under the soft ibiza chillout trance category.. like something dj shah would play, more trance than ambient and a little too happy/positive sounding compared to the samples
special +1 @ trentemoller & buda - gamma (original mix) because its an amazing piece of ambience, 
the stuff ive checked from tangerine dream, explosions and especially hammock all seems to have elements of the kinda sound im lookin for, some of it is soft rock though, but some are all out ambience with guitars, and some of those are pretty haunting at that
a lot of the dead can dance stuff would be more interesting without the vocals, dont wanna verge too much into 'soft goth rock' per say haha, well either way its more of a pick and choose affair when your looking for specifics
