I usually use the melody of the track if there's no percussion in the beginning.

I also use the hi-hats, whatever percussion is playing, and etc.

If it's nearly impossible... I search through the track for the first bass-drum, beatmatch from there, and once I got the track at the correct (knowing to increase/decrease the speed at the moment the song becomes out of sync), I go back the first phrase of the song, cue it up, and I PRESS the play button on the new phrase of the out-going track .... of course, you have to make sure you got it on the spot.

takes a lot of practice, but, it makes your mixing a lot more smooth.... if that made any sense, that is :P

Definately not impossible, you'll eventually come to a point where you just know that the track is off by listening to the other elements of the track, if necessary create the beats in your head, by tapping your foot or bobbing your head, ect. to when the beats would be on. With propper phrase matching it shouldn't be too difficult to get in the right ball park with how the tracks should line up.

I'm assuming that you want to bring in a track that starts off with...let's say a symphonic intro where the first beat/kick is a minute+ away...while the current track is playing, skip to the first beat on the track you have on deck and align the beats. Once you have the beats matched, bring the needle back to the beginning and release it on par with the first beat of the wind down of the current track.

I actually do this a lot, but it takes practice.

I've never understood whats so hard about beatmatching while one of the tracks doesn't have a kick. There are so many elements of the kick-less track that you can use; percussion, synth attacks, melody lines, etc. I've never listened to one piece of a track for beatmatching, I listen to the tracks as a whole.

It's not hard to mix an intro/outro, and by no means is it "almost impossible or pure luck."

Indeed. In fact, I mix a lot of breaks and it would be impossible to mix any of the tracks if you just listened to the beat. I've always found matching the highs much more accurate anyway.
