Aye, this thread is pretty lame but since I'm home on a Saturday for a change then I shall join the lameness!!!
First up, Tiesto is actually a desent guy, very enthusiastic about what he does and very easy to talk to. Secondly, he is also very aware of his own abilities in comparison to the likes of the more technical DJs out there and will frequently speak of this in interviews... the opposite of arrogance if you ask me.
Are DJs arrogant generally. Some are for sure, but then are supermarket managers arrogant too? Sure some are.
That said, to achieve something you do have to have self belief and confidence and as it's already been highlighted, it can easlily spill over into or be mistaken for arrogance.
The only real difference between confidence and arrogance is the level of humility that you display with your skill.
Of course I'm a failed musician and the line between DJing and Music is so far appart... Whatever.
The thread starter should be aware that there are a large amount of DJs out there who are also musicians and producers, and quite a few of them have answered in this thread... no surprise there given that they have just been labeled as failures by thread starter.
I'm a Bassist, Drummer and Guitarist with a bit of Piano for good measure (No pun intended), not to mention dance music producer.
To suggest that there isn't musical skills at work when you DJ must suggest that the person making that remark is...
1. Not a DJ and thinks that the comment, "We have had enough of this, can you play something with a beat to it" is going to provide good sound advice to a DJ in a club.
2. Calls themselves a DJ but has not understood the first thing about what it really means.
But I think the main gripe was more at the amount of antogonism and such like that you get in these forums. Which to some degree is true because I don't really think there is ever an excuse for rudeness.
But these mistakes will happen all the time because people have a habit of reading tone of voice into writing and something that we seamingly harmless can start a flamewar. But you think this forum is bad, check out the Chill Our Room... Nothing chilled in there except perhaps the reception you will get.
The thread starter has actually made a valid point and that is that there is definately a certain mentality that comes with it. And I think that is what he is ultimately getting at.
Cheers
I'm not arrogant I'm just the world's best Nem
