Yeah I was a little sad to see Jed go but he's a player that any team would be happy to have, doesn't play a lot of minutes but works his ass off. I literally saw him like two weeks ago and I didn't even think about him leaving the team. As for Nashville the Blackberry guy isn't going to get that team at all, first off that guy is an idiot he should have bought the team then made subtle plans to move them to Ontario not started preselling tickets . Anyhow Nashville to Kansas City, don't know which idea is worse. Although Kansas City does have a beautiful HOK building just waiting for a team to take residence.
Petr Sykora to Pittsburgh should be interesting, he used to be a Penguin and I've always liked him so he should fit fine.

To his defense, Trump didn't even really look like a bum.

You'll probably run into them in the elevator at work if you keep your eyes open.

not really, free agents have got to go somewhere and since there is a cap not everyone can keep their players

A bit of a hit?? More like a large one.. Actually i can deal with out gomez he is easy to replace. But a solid defensman that scores goals and joins the play on offense like rafalski did is tough to loose.

this is not a signing, but i thought this was pretty cool by the isles
The best thing about a great idea is how quickly it spreads. This is one of those ideas: The New York Islanders have created the NYI Blog Box, a psuedo-press box exclusively for fans who have—or will have—their own blogs about the team. Bloggers will get credentials for one game, a seat in the Blog Box, a set of game notes and the chance to ask a few questions of a player or coach after the game. Bloggers who are selected will have their blogs linked to at newyorkislanders.com. And, unlike in standard press boxes, cheering will be encouraged. In the first 48 hours after the plan was announced, 137 bloggers applied. Now that’s a great idea. —Ryan Fagan

i second that. gomez leaving was set in stone when he went to arbitration last year. unfortunately that's how players come and go through NJ. When it works, having the same mentality as Herb Brooks used in 1980 ("I'm not looking for the best players, I'm looking for the right players") makes Lou look like a genius. Unfortunately he hasn't looked too bright since the lockout with the moves he has made.
The ranger's defense is still garbage so perhaps Sather is modeling them after the yankees (all offense, no pitching).
I didn't want to see gomez go across the river but I knew that the rangers had a bunch of $$$ to spend so I wasn't surprised. I just didnt think they would get two of the big name free agents.
Only time will tell how this is going to play out for the rangers and devils this season.
good idea for this thread btw.

i hear ya, but i don't know if i believe that the success of the rangers has a bearing on the vitality of the league. Just as a small example, I'm pretty sure the canadian fans would love hockey regardless (actually, the success of the canadian teams is probably more vital for the league). Also, california fans don't really care about NY teams.

Well it does and Canadian fans have no bearing on Nielsen ratings so they don't matter in this case. The Rangers are important because they are in the heart of NYC and the NYC metro area is the number one media market in America, Los Angeles is number two but LA fans have proven themselves of being fair weather fans. NHL gets screwed because of their ratings, dropped by ESPN/ABC, getting ok money from Versus and a rev share deal with NBC (which mean they take the adverting money pay for production with it then split the rest 50/50. NBC has a similar deal with the AFL). Television money separates the low level leagues from those in the upper echelon…you can also see this on a team by team basis too(ie Yankees or Red Sox with vs Royals or Brewers).
Seeing that the salary cap is tied to league revenue which is in turn tied to ratings and ratings are tied to number of households watching the NHL don’t you think the team playing in the number one media market is important? When the Rangers won in ’94 there was a noticeable bump in interest nationwide. The Rangers are the second most profitable team in the NHL so they themselves are doing great but I can guarantee you NBC and Gary Bettman are hoping for a New York Rangers – Detroit Red Wings finals rather than a series like this year. Might I also add that one game this year posted the lowest ratings on NBC and I don’t mean for the year or for a Stanley Cup Finals I mean lowest NBC ratings EVER.
