It's been a while since high school band, but if I recall correctly, 3/4 and 6/8 are not the same at all, as far as the style goes.
3/4 has three distinct emphasized beats per measure.
6/8 has two emphasized beats with the two following beats less pronounced. It can also be written as 2/4 times, with each beat being a triplet. I actually played a song once that switched between 2/4 and 6/8 time quite a bit, with the 2/4 time using triplets and 6/8 using eigth notes, and it had exactly the same effect.
As far as dance music goes, I think 3/4 would be very difficult to dance to, because the First beat of each measure is emphasized, while in 4/4 the first and third beat are emphasized, and since you have two feet, and usually alternate, you would wind up all twisted up.
6/8 on the other hand would be very easy to dance to. It has two distinctive beats 1 & 4, with 23 and 56 being less pronounced.
