ah so when you play the sound it only plays as long as the force is there? there is no lasting fading notes.

the issues ive seen with newbs is the tendency to have fingers too far away from the fret. if second fret is what you are play you want the string to be wrapped tightly around the second fret. so anchor the wire as close to it as you can. the middle space between frets is a no mans land. get right behind the fret and strum. rotate the guitar so its not looking at your face so your wrist can wrap around and your fingers arent muting the strings.

I'm trying to do as you said, and it's close to what I want it to sound. However, I seem to inevitably mute the strings - and that's exactly the thing I want to avoid

rotate the guitar forward. youre probably rolling it back to see the strings you are pressing which means your hand is bent at a crazy angle and your fingers are laying on the strings.

but seriously tucking it under the arm and bring the neck of the guitar close to your body helps. the strumming hand can be farther back than you think , doesnt need to be at your navel.

get that hand on the guitar neck to be within your shoulder width

It could simply be that your fingers don't have enough strength in them yet. Search for various exercises that will help you build strength, this will help you to avoid unintentionally touching strings you shouldn't (thereby muting them).

This particular finger position simply requires precision, which will come with practise . Also try make sure your fingers come from above the string, not at a slant.

do what feels comfortable. a book will tell you a certain way to finger it, and while usually there's good reason to have good "form" when playing the guitar, you don't have to follow any set rules. how i play C maj:

e--- (nothing)
B-1- (index finger)
G-0- (open)
D-2- (middle finger)
A-3- (ring finger)
E--- (nothing)

how i play Amin, and how a book will tell you to play Amin:

"my way"
e-0- (open)
B-1- (index finger)
G-2- (middle finger)
D-2- (also middle finger)
A-0- (open)
E--- (nothing)

"real way"
e-0- (open)
B-1- (index finger)
G-2- (ring finger)
D-2- (middle finger)
A-0- (open)
E--- (nothing)

as you can see, the "real way" to do it is extremely uncomfortable to finger. so i use my middle finger to bar off the G and D strings simultaneously. of course this is talking about your average "open" chords, if you use barre chords then the fingering is completely different. if you need more help, shoot me a pm.

btw, if your chord doesn't sound like it's ringing out completely, it's because you have bad form with your fingers. the harder you try to press down the strings, the worse your hand will cramp up. relax, hold the guitar correctly, and take it slow. otherwise you'll get frustrated (or hurt yourself). once you learn all the open chords (i.e. Amaj, Amin, Emaj, Emin, Cmaj, Dmaj, Dmin, etc) you'll be able to jam out on any of them no prob. practice, dude.

if you're having a hard time pressing down the strings (especially with an acoustic)- try going to a guitar/music shop and tell them to lower the action of the strings (so the strings are closer to the frets/neck). it'll be easier to push down, and it'll feel a lot smoother when playing. And, restring the guitar with light gauge strings i guess. might be easier then.
