its way more complicated than that. Most modern Antidepressants are tricyclics that have SSRIs, norepinephrine and dopamine.
food doesnt help. The brains too smart to get happy from eating chocolate and bananas. |
When simplified, all mental states are actually just chemical states that the brain produces via neurotransmitters. Of course, the brain can't produce any of these states if a person isn't eating the things needed to allow for any of these chemicals to be synthesized. I don't know about chocolate lol, but well, healthy body & healthy mind kind of go hand in hand.
I know it was mentioned already but I'd have to put exercise pretty high on my list, along w/eating right. No matter how stressful your life is, after a 5 mile run on the treadmill, all you can think about is how to catch your breath . Weights, cardio, etc clears the mind a lot more than one would think. All you can really focus on is the physical strain you're under, then after you're done you're left with a pretty good high that tends to last through the day.
It's not easy to just get up and change things in your life if you're already depressed, but try to make efforts at eliminating the factors that stress you out. If you're depressed about something in particular, then try to tend to that matter. If you're just generally depressed for no particular reason, try changing your day to day activities for the better, or just hit up the Wellbutrin. Regardless of what things are going on in your life, all moods can be altered chemically, as all moods are are chemical states. Exercise, eating, drug use, and anti-depressant medication all alter the brain's chemical state along with the situations you experience.
I think someone mentioned cognitive-behavioral restructuring as well. That would probably work too. Maybe shoot for an Asian Philosophy/Buddhism course. Things are less depressing when you learn to let go... of a lot of the BS social schemes about what the ideal life should be.
