Hes supposedly a hell of a martial artist. Great build and stature for it as well.
only when you suppose wrong. he's now a grandmaster in one of the aikido lineages in japan, which means.... SHIT. aikido has to be the most gayed up martial art ever, with few schools practicing anything worth training any more. he just does compliant drills and techniques, where he gets a crappy jointlock and the partner voluntarily jumps through the air.
sure, it looks pretty. AND RANDORI DOESN'T FUCKING MEAN THREE MAN ATTACK. it's just free-form sparring.
you can google the story of when he got too smart with movie stuntman, "Judo" Gene Lebell. one of the best american judokas ever, who among many things, trained Bruce Lee in some grappling/groundfighting. basically, Segal he was talking about being a badass, how his aikido was ftw, and Gene said he could probably choke him out.
accounts say Gene went at him, grabbed him and applied a choke, but Segal argued he was not ready yet, so Gene let go, let him get ready, and went at him again. long story short, it ended up with Segal actually CRAPPING HIS MOTHERFUCKING PANTS and waking up minutes later from unconsciousness.
Gene was an old timer by the time this happened as well. it is said Steven fired him and all the other stuntment, and they've never worked in a Segal related project again. hah.
ninja edit: Chuck Norris on the other hand, is a blackbelt in many reputable systems of martial arts, and has proved his fighting ability many times. sure, it's nothing like in the movies, but in reality, he is a truly proficient fighter, and even started his own fighting promotion, The World Combat League, where there is real full contact fighting.
Inertia, those joint locks are actually really... yes, the martial artist give themselves up and voluntarily hop into the throw - the thing is, they dont have a choice - if they dont give themselves up, they risk breaking their elbow and tearing out all the ligaments associated with it.
Jui-jitsu, Judo and Combat Sambo are probably the most practical fighting styles on the planet. You skip all the amature pushing and shoving... just grab the guy, take him down and make him cry.

while, that may be arguable, the reality of the fact is no one will ever attack in a way such a jointlock is practical. not to mention, if you grab someone like that, they're going to change positions, jump on you, try to get their hand out of the grab, or maybe... JUST MAYBE... PUNCH YOU.
i've done some hapkido (korean aikido) and the jointlocks/wristgrabs are fucking cool to practice, but you'll basically never use them. whereas, when i've done judo randori, first theres the standup grappling, which normally leads to someone getting thrown or fucking slammed into the ground. hard. it hurts. and it doesn't look pretty (well, sometimes it does, when you get SERIOUSLY pwnt). then, you go ground grappling, and yes, someone just might cry.
you do not see crappy martial arts styles in places like the UFC, Pride and whatnot for a simple reason: they suck. however, tried and proven styles like judo show you it can very well be traditional and old, and still work.

I did Judo and Sambo for 3 years (never faught in tournaments though, it was just out of interest when I was a kid), and trust me, I know all about throwing and getting thrown.
I was at the beach one night with a couple of friends, and one of them trained Judo for like 10-15 years in russia and he was showing me these advanced throws which, although not practical, were pretty fucking cool.
Honestly, if someone gets in your face, a shoulder or hip throw is more than enough to suffice, with position to get into a kimura.
