True the first technically was for SNES but i never had it.
I had the 8-bit, 64-bit, and the Game Cube.

Diddykong Racing was way better than Mario Kart for 64.

Icicle Pyramid.

People say probably the best sim right now is RFactor. There's a ton of different cars as the community is always building new mods for the game (check this website to see what I mean, all of it is free for download). However the problem with these "ultra-realistic" games is that most of them are really hard to drive without a steering wheel.. I tried the demo and couldn't control the car on my keyboard..

I play Grand Prix 4, keyboard driving is a lot more easier there. The game is a bit outdated, but with the most recent mods the graphics become quite decent (it should already be too much for your PC, lol). However there isn't a lot of different cars available, pretty much only formula cars, altho just this week someone released a Le Mans mod and there's a DTM mod in progress too.

I'm not exactly sure if this is the kind of games you're looking for, these simulate racing around circuits, if you just want something to "drive around" I think a new game came out that is called Forza Motorsport or something like that, that goes along those lines.. but i think it's for X-Box only.

Need for Speed is a load of arcadey crap, except for the Porsche game which is quite good.

Thanks for the replies thus far! I may check out TOCA 3 for my PC. Also, I have Madcatz univeral racing wheel, which will work with PS2, GC, and Xbox.

Again, I'm not saying that racing sims are "off limits," just that I'd prefer something that offered more leisure. Something more open ended, if it exists.

I have Nascar 2002, GTA3 and GTA:Vice City for the PC. They're all fun, and I love jacking cars and riding around listening to mixes from the DJ Promo forum, but the city gets small fast, hence the need to search out new material. An Xbox 360 is definitely not in the budget right now, but something like a PS2 is not out of the question in the coming months.

I pwned at Mario Kart tonight, BTW.

my buddy got his brand new xbox360 for $140.

oh and NFS:PU is great. NFS:HP, HP2, NFS:U and NFS:U2 are the worst of the NFS series. as mentioned they are "pimp my ride" style and they have horrid game play. all about the gay ass story.

well if you only have GTA3 and Vice City then you need to check out San Andreas. when the world is fully unlocked it is much much bigger than the other two games. driving games are generally racing games, so you likely wont be able to avoid that.

unless you bought a real car and drove it around. but then you have goals like not hitting things and buying it gas..

oh and NFS:PU ftl! the 914 is fine, you just fucked up the settings when you modded it|

i never said it was the best. but you usually only raced other 914s and you should be able to stomp them without much trouble.

the 959 was craaazy tho. i liked the gt3 the best|

993 911 Turbo GT2 = my fav.

until you were able to upgrade the 914 it sucked ass and wasnt that easy to stomp them but yes i do agree that once you got any upgrades you were able to stomp them pretty easy.

NFS:PU was my favourite racing game for a while. Loved it until my cd exploded in the drive somehow

For the most realistic racing sim, Id recommended GTR 2 for PC. There are options to tone down the difficulty too. Apparently it was used by real racers in the off-season to practice with.

Also, here is a forum for racing simulators:
RaceSimCentral

They have a lot of different subforums for different varieties of racing games.

If you want to just cruise around like you said, then Rfactor is good, from what I know, there are a few custom made levels that are made to just cruise around in without any checkpoints/laps etc. I remember trying one out last year that was modelled after a few small villages linked by highways in Poland, there could be others now too. Add to that a bunch of custom cars to download and your in for some fun!
