Lots of good advice in here. If you want to learn music theory for harmonization google on "4 Part harmony", you'll get to learn about plagal and perfect cadences, how to avoid parallel 5ths and a whole pile of otherstuff that isn't that much use for what you're trying to do.

Then again.. :-)

Best and simpliest way is to compose the string section in the piano, then you just divide each section.

learn music theory. iT really isn't hard at all. IN fact it is so easy that most composers in eaerly 20th century stopped making tonal music alltogether because every possible melody had kinda already been made and i suppose they kinda thought it was lame. use of proper voice leading as well as suspensions will create something that doesn't sound lame.

here is some old stuff of mine because i stopped making dance a few years ago. THis is before ever learning theory and looking back it sounds pretty cliche and simple. It doesn't sound so bad because the voice leading is pretty good and the use of suspensions makes it less boring.

the second one is neat in that it starts off kinda cliche but as the arp opens up , the harmony changes and makes it sound pretty neat
