The ugly:
Getting stuck for 30 minutes on the Martin Luther King freeway exit, then another 15 mins to go 2 blocks down MLK to the Sports Arena!
Waiting 45+ minutes in the VIP line, which was right across from the GUEST LIST line for which there were no people except 3-4 event staff. I think they may have been letting in some small groups from the VIP line occasionally though. My friend got to the regular line about the same time as me, and we both got in about the same time!
After entering, couldn't figure out where the VIP area was. The first "yellow coat" staff correctly told me to go down the escalator, but there were so many people in front of the escalator I must have walked right past it. The second "yellow coat" all the way at the other end didn't have any information...he just kept pointing to a printed list of wristband types, and said only ALL ACCESS could go any further. There was a group of people in front of me who were screaming and frustrated that they couldn't find the VIP area either. Only after checking at the security office (where the first woman there had no clue) did a guy come over who actually knew what was going on.
Once getting to the VIP area, the bar was a total clusterf*ck, and took about 20 mins to get a drink.
I mention all of this because it almost ruined the night for me. I know the freeway is out of anyone's control, but once I arrived at the Sports Arena, was over 1 1/2 hours until I got to the dance floor, with a VIP ticket. Jes' set was already over, but I did hear some of it waiting in line somewhere...
The bad:
After Jes finished, a video game animation of Tiesto played on the screen for something like 30 mins. I ran into Kristina Sky and we were both like wtf, can't they get a warm-up DJ?
Somewhere I saw that Tiesto would be spinning a 6-hour set. He came on at 10:38 p.m., but went past the advertised 3 a.m. closing time until 3:38 a.m. This could also go into "the good" section though, as 5 hours is better than the typical hour or hour and a half at most massive events!
Having seen Tiesto in Concert LA and Las Vegas in 2005, guess my expectations were set pretty high. The visuals and live performances during that show were really stunning, beyond anything I saw last night. Maybe the night should have been billed as "Tiesto Elements of Life Tour" without the "Tiesto in Concert" so everyone doesn't keep comparing them. All that said, tix were $85GA, $200VIP for TIC-LA 2005. This year, tix started at $55GA, $100VIP and then went up as the event got closer.
The good:
I think the night sold out, or came close to it. Even the bleachers were pretty full, so a lot more people came out for this than TIC-LA in 2005 (was it 21+ then though? ...I can't remember). Always good to see record numbers of people supporting EDM music, it makes the future look bright! Was a lot more difficult to get up front though, best I could do was get about 3 people back from the security wall...
I enjoyed Tiesto's set...his energy was so high, being fueled by such an incredible turnout! His last song was Rank 1's "Breathing (Airwave)," which continued to play after he left the stage.
Toward the end, Tijs spoke into a mic and let everyone know that he had been asked where he'd like to play for NYE this year. He said "Los Angeles" was easily the answer, signed his headphones and threw them into the crowd, then walked from one end of the security wall to the other shaking people's hands.
