Hi barbi,
well, that's always disappointing to find, hope that your new fish will live longer and happy to please you and make up for your loss I only had a fish once so far, it was a purple male beta - the "fighter fish". My friend bought it for me and it died like after two months I just came home one afternoon and found it dead in the mini beta-tank (those stupid relatively small ones you can buy in the pet stores, which have no filter or heater). I didn't even know that it was sick, although in retrospect I relise that it must have been, cause some weeks before it died it started moving somewhat strangely in the tank, and my friend (who had fish a few times before) told me that he's never seen a fish to swim like that. Maybe it was in pain and was trying to give me a hint... I guess that I didn't know how to properly take care of it, i.e. whenever I changed the water in its tank, I always changed all of the water, and maybe I overfed it a little too. I was later told that you're not supposed to change all of the water at once, but only about one third of the volume of the tank. I felt sad of course too, but I didn't flush it down the toilet, I can't imagine doing that...
Well good luck to your new gold-fish again, hope you enjoy it and that it won't die on you again... Take care
