Sorry to hear. Cats are awesome. My family lost 2 dogs so I kinda know how it feels when there isn't much else you can do for them.

Trick question.

Had to put our cat down a few months ago - she was like 17 years old and had teh diabeetuhs but she was a great cat for the majority of my lifetime. In fact, I knew that cat longer than I've actually ever had/maintained a friendship with another human being, so I guess that says a lot about her.

Anyways, quite sorry to hear about your cat. Whatever happens, may he be swiftly ushered into that lofty realm where the great spirit awaits us all.

Ok, took my cat to the vet this morning.

He's got thyroid disease and possibly renal failure. But he is not at the point of being put down, but he's close. He's got a really bad flu, so I put some vicks vaporub on his nose and chest because he wouldn't stop coughing and weezing. Settled him down, got him on anti-biotics, and thyroid medicine. If I can nurse him back, that'll be good, if not, then it's the end.

It's a little surreal after having this cat for more than half my life.

it's not going to be an easy decision, but you have to do what's best for your pet.
We lost my wife's dog a couple of years ago. he was a bit off colour for a while, the vets said it was minor things, a few pills, then we went to a new vet who said it was cancer and he's not got long. Was very hard. knowing we did the right thing did not make it any easier to say goodbye.

I've got two 12 year old huskies now and am not looking forward to when their time comes, but make the most of the time I have with them now.

Best luck with it and don't give up on him, cats are tough little suckers.

losing a pet is never easy, no matter how long they've been around for. i've lost a few cats in my lifetime and it is always heartbreaking... but when they're sick or getting too old it's important to do the humane thing and let them go so they're not sitting around wallowing in misery and pain.

it's a tough decision, i know. i watched a very close friend of our family let their cat get to a point where he just really should not have been alive anymore - i mean he couldn't eat, use the litterbox, walk up stairs, etc... and they basically had to lock him in the basement because they didn't want to put him down. finally my mom forced them to do the right thing, and as sad as it was to know that he was in kitty heaven (i grew up with this cat - we were good buddies) it was a relief to know that he wasn't sitting around in some basement all alone and in pain.

Krypton - Sasha and i send our best wishes and a warm cuddle to get you through your hard times.

thanks!

Our cat is heading down that road. He's gotten damned skinny and won't eat much and barely drinks any water (which he needs to help his poor digestive tract). He's also pretty much blind and he eyes are cloudy and constantly dialated, and we have to give him medicine to help reduce the pain from his palsy. He's not bad enough to warrant putting down just yet, but I wouldn't give him much longer than a year. He'll at least have lived a good 15 years before he dies. I'm just glad it didn't happen when I was younger, because he's our first pet and I don't think I would have been able to deal with it back then.

Just sitting here on my lap, his breathing sounds like a wheeze, like he's short of breath. This cat can't even hold its head up all the way its so weak. It's really sad watching it get worse by the week. Imma take him to the vet and see what they say tomorrow. Might have to put him down.

Anyone else lose a animal companion recently?

I had to put my cat down a couple of years ago so I know how you feel. He had skin cancer and the last few weeks with him were heart-wrenching to say the least.

Talk to the vet, but if he's in real pain (and it sounds like he is) then you should put him down asap.

Because humans are stupid. I'm all for putting them down if they're beyond any sort of help.
