let's remember the napster wars: someone proved that an artist gets only 50 cents off of each $15.00 CD. doesn't that mean remixers get even less?

besides, if for some unknown reason you would wanna download something like "best club hits vol. 569" or "party trance vol. 217", then you're welcome to do it. downloading quality stuff should be shameful.

so another question would be: do you feel bad if you download and don't buy, aka "steal"? i don't.

I think it's wrong to Dl a compilation, the majority of the time you know the style of the Dj and the songs that are on it so why Dl it. There is no valid reason to do it other than to steal from the artist.

Ok I'm ready for the flames.

yeh but on that note most compilations are made by clubs and people to make money by mixing other peoples work, so in the end, it isnt punishing them by downlading them. take MoS compilations for example all complete commericallised shite, made to make monye, whereas albums the creator of the album has all his own work and spent time on it, not just mixed up 74 minutes worht of tracks from his record box, i hope this shows my opinion quite often the artists are paid to mix the albums as well (eg ferry corsten for Trance Nation)

and remixers get a fixed fee for remixing...

Last time i checked none of the DJs that i have 'stolen from' are in desperate need of my $15 so i dont feel bad at all about downloading cds. In fact almost my entire collection is 'stolen' (~2000 cds)

Interesting discussion, so I'm trying to revive this one.

IMHO, some CDs are just worth buying, and others not even worth the download. Keeping that in mind, the quality of music will only improve in the long term, because they know if people have an alternative to downloading stuff rather than buying them, and if your own kind of music sucks, then obviously you're not going to get a lot of sales. On the other hand, if you've always been well respected musically, and you're sure that this new album is going to kick ass, you won't have anything to worry about. Take Gatecrasher's new DigitalTrance_ as an example. Who would download this double CD and burn it and who would buy it and keep it, packaging and all? I would buy it anytime.
