I'd imagine it's definately good to get in the habit of doing your keying by ear, mucking around with a keyboard and overlaying compatible chords etc. But Rapid Evolution is very useful for beginners who (think they) know nothing about music and don't want to be overwhelmed at the beginning. Once you've used RE2 and done some harmonically mixed sets the next step is to buy that midi keyboard and start learning. Nothing like a great night of mixing to get you enthusiastic about learning more.

Yes I did. I have yet to buy my first decks . So far just software mixed using Traktor aided by Rapid Evolution, but that's been enough encouragement for me to start exploring the music theory already, although I do have some background in playing the piano, from high school days though. I've already played a pre-recorded mix at a friends party and they liked it, and I really have very little music theory knowledge, and yet I could harmonically mix with the aid of RE2. Now I'm keen to learn more.

My paragraph was simply encouragement for beginners. I'm a firm believer that anyone can do anything, and I mean anything, they want to do in this world, especially now in the age of the internet where all the information you could ever want on just about anything is available for free .

Perhaps this harmonic mixing method will finally allow me to find something that mixes properly in and out of Sebastien Leger - Bad Clock.

That track has ALWAYS sounded weird and out of place, no matter what I try mixing it into. I think it must be in a an unusual key or something.

programs might be all well and good but they dont really teach you anything. if you do indeed have a good ear it shouldnt take you very long at all. plus, i find it heaps of fun keying tracks, finding out how they work. challenging myself to learn the melody on the piano etc. fuck waiting minutes for a program to give me back a (possibly incorrect) analysis.

As I mentioned, using RE2 to run a batch analysis and then verifying by ear using the built-in piano is a very streamlined method. Even if you're not inclined to use any sort of processing algorithm, it is a great piece of software designed to help DJs build a database of their collection. Where do you write the key down once you've found it?

What I like about RE2 is that it takes care of the spreadsheet angle, seamlessly exporting to Excel format for printing. Plus I really appreciate the facility for making note of tracks that work together. Crazily enough, I think the "work" I do finding good mixes is available for anyone using RE2 to access (it's collaborative as well). I just cannot recommend this software enough as a DJ tool, whether it is used for batch harmonic analysis or mere note-taking.

that's all well and good, but my ears are more accurate than any piece of software, and i have no desire to be getting keys from collaborative efforts when i have no way to ascertain the accuracy of the information (other than checking it myself, which defeats the purpose).
