Right then...
Thursday
Drove down. Nothing much really, 14 hours of driving sucks. Got to my hotel and figured that because it was $85/night and I booked it a month in advance that it would be a piece of shit. It was in dirty area of town, about two blocks west of the Glide Memorial Church. The outside looked dumpy, letters were missing from the sign, and when the guy handed me the key to my room it turned out to be an actual key. I felt uneasy about the whole situation, but I opened my room and it was the nicest hotel room I'd ever stayed in. A minimal-ish design to it, complete with flatscreen HD TV. I guess the reason for the cheap price was the neighborhood.
Friday
Walked around town a bit and met up with a friend who's living there while attending the Academy of Art. We saw Resident Evil 3 (crappy, as was expected) and went to Virgin to pick up some CDs. I snagged Telefon Tel Aviv's "Fahrenheit Fair Enough" and Boards of Canada's "Music Has the Right to Children." Telefon's album is massive win. Headed over to Chipotle for dinner with my friend, then made the long walk to the venue for the Chems.
Got in early enough to catch the opening DJ. Dear God was she terrible. The majority of her set I swear she had the gains and EQs cranked as high as each knob could go because all I could hear from the speakers was the sound of her peaking. Absolutely terrible. Ladytron was okay, I'm just not a fan in general.
The Chems put on a sick show, but it wasn't as good as the show they had for Push the Button back in '05. Absolutely sick visuals, though. I was excited when they started to play The Sunshine Underground, but they really rushed into the build (which totally makes the track) and lost all the energy it could've had. Was great meeting Bas there.
Saturday
Parade/Festival
Woke up early, figured I'd show up to the meet. Nobody really showed up so I headed to the start of the parade. Followed the Kontrol float all the way to the festival grounds, where I headed over to the Listed float and met up with Bas, Clovis, Tigo and the whole group. Was great meeting you guys. The Listed float absolutely DESTROYED all day despite power failures, and the last hour was simply nuts. The DJ that played last ended appropriately on Louis Armstrong's version of What a Wonderful World.
Afterparty
HOLY SHIT! You have got to be kidding me! My jaw hit the floor last night. No, it's not because some DJ blew me out of the water, it's because the doors OPENED ON TIME and we actually got in just five minutes after that. I was shocked, absolutely shocked.
As for the rest of it? Sucked ass, but worse than I expected. I'll get into a rant in a second here, but I'll give a gist of the night first. I met Tigo in line, hung out with him for a bit before Psiweaver said he was at the front. I hopped in line with him and got in. We sat around as Deep Voices/Dyloot played music that was suitable only for a 2AM or 3AM set, but it was only 9PM. We checked out Three in the side room, who was okay. The rest of the group wanted to see J00F so we headed back to the main room. Meh, nothing special. Three came on, but we were getting food and we didn't catch him. We sat in the bleachers and hung out, and I honest to God fell asleep during Gabriel and Dresdens set. Sasha came on at the flow of energy in the building was so messed up (just wait 'til my rant) and we were all tired so we left. I passed out and passed out good. So sore the next morning.
Afterparty Rant
I said to Psiweaver as soon as we got in that there had to be a catch to us actually making it in on time. Lo and behold, there was!
That was seriously the most Godawful, disgusting timeslot setup I have ever seen.
Firstly, Deep Voices/Dyloot were playing at 9PM what should be played at 2 or 3 AM. Way too hard for an opening act. I didn't catch Nicksons set so I can't really speak on that part. J00F threw down, sure, but WAY too early in the night. What the fuck were you thinking by putting Three, who plays significantly softer than J00F on for just a FIFTEEN MINUTE set after him? If I were three I would've stuck on a fifteen minute track and just left. Then you had Gabriel and Dresden up the tempo and energy in the room only to have Sasha, who plays sets softer than G&D come on after them and build a set for Ferry.
Sitting in the main room listening to all of it felt like a clusterfuck of energy. I was appalled. If anything, it should've been Three -> Sasha -> G&D -> Deep Voices/Dyloot -> Nickson -> J00F -> Ferry. Yes, you'll tell me like you have in the past that there is only so much you can do with the lineup because of the way certain artists have their contracts set, etc. but you should predict that in advance and plan for it.
Disgusting. Not to sound like an asshole or anything here, but after three years of this I'm happy that I'll be 21 next year and will have other options available to me for an afterparty. Never again.
Oh, and I understand that it's a venue deal and not your fault, but what the hell was up with putting water in the cups and not giving out bottles? They cited safety reasons? What the hell? Yeah, okay, making it easier to slip something into someones water is sure a hell of a lot safer.
Sunday
Woke up, couldn't walk. Stayed in my hotel room all day.
Monday
Here I am, after the 14 hour ride back. The trip concluded what was seriously the best month ever. I traveled to Vancouver to see Digweed, Denver to see Underworld, saw BB King play, and partied at what I thought was the best LPSF to date with some awesome TAs. Excellent weekend all around.
I'll have photos and videos up tomorrow. Right now, I feel like I'm about to faceplant into my keyboard.
