Fuel prices over here are nearly twice that. The UK has the highest rate of tax on fuel in Europe.

Interesting one for the environmentalists: Did you know that a modern catalyst equipped car actually cleans the air when driving through a city centre? This is due to the air being polluted more by buses, buildings and foreign industry (trans-boundary pollution, a most unwelcome import!)

Air pollution levels are actually falling, and have been since 1990. Modern car emissions are already over 99.9% colourless, odourless, naturally occurring gases which pose no threat to air quality or climate change.

Dude i totally agree, here in Germany you pay about 1 Euro for a liter of gas. With 3.8 liters in a gallon, that works out to 3.80 Euros for a gallon of gas, or about $3.50 for a gallon in U.S. currency. Americans get off waaaaaaay cheap in the gas situation, i can't believe they can complain when they have to pay a whole $1.70 for a gallon of gas.

In Europe it is different than here. I'll give you an example. I drive to work 130 KM. one way every single day. And I have no choice but to do it. I go through about 60 litres of gas every 2 days. Thats a lot fo driving a lot of gas. If there was a better solution, believe I would not drive this much. Wouldn't you be pissed about it? I am not the only person that does that. In our society a lot of people commute to other cities for work purposes. I mean we have the busiest highway in North America (Highway 401 for those of you that live in the area). If people had another choice, trust me many would. Another thing is that many people here go camping or to their cottages. Some places that my friends and I go to are more that 1000 KM. away. You can't go there any other way.

it appears to me that you 'want to keep the cake and eat it..' you want to live in the countryside, because of the clean air or whatnot, yet earny the high wages in the city.. well, you will have to calculate if that really works out for you, before bitching about gas prices..

as for your cottages, if it is that far away, maybe you don't need to go there every weekend?!?

it is all about compromises, if you want (think you need) to have a cottage that is 1000km away, then you will have to accept that you need to drive there and spend money on getting there...

Actually I don't live in the country side, I live ina ctiry of about 400,000. As for moving to where I work, I am a student and this a work term from school which I have to complete to graduate. As for moving to where I work, impossible. I can't afford to pay $1000/month for rent. Where I work those are the prices for apartments, if you can find one. You want a room, try about $500/month. I rather spend $300/month than move up here. See my point wasn't as much about gas prices, it was more about gas companies doing whatever the fuck they want.

I think that the US gov should increase the prices of gas, they are insanely low in America, the biggest polluter in the world

the difference between north america and europe is that in europe some things are really expensive while others are of a fair enough price. in north american, everything is expensive.
another thing, the average salary in north america is below the average salary in europe
holland is small, you dont need much of public transport. and having a car is not that big of a deal because you dont have to pay $2000 for insurance every year, or do you?

Very good point apri_peel. $2000 a year that is still a decent insurance rate for a young person. I have friends which pay more than $3000 a year. Try owing a sports bike. You better have a lot of money to pay for insurance. I won't even mention the prices for car parts and rates that mechanics charge. I don't about you guys but my friends and I, we are scattered all over the city. Now it would take me about 2 hours on the bus to get somewhere to meet with them or hang out. By car propably 15 - 20 minutes.
