I got the chance to play around with it at the Sander Kleineberg show last month here in Seattle @ the Last Supper Club where I am a resident at.


I was asked by a Pioneer employee the question below:

Here's something I'm asking, not because I don't know the answer but I want an honest opinion from you for others to see...

Did you have to read the manual before using it? Obviously you won't know how to use every feature before spending a lot of time with it, but what I'm asking is more along the lines of "Was it intimidating or were you able to figure it out and start having fun mixing on it right away?"


My answer:

I thought it was a breeze *Shrugs*. Granted I'm familiar with the pioneer products (own an 800 and have used most of their mixers at my shows) but I was able to do anything I wanted with it after glancing at it (the mixer) for about 20 seconds, just to make sure I knew where the key pieces were. I have no clue what the manual looks like and for a DJ, I truly don't think you'd even have to look at it to understand this mixer.

The touchscreen is extremely simplified and believe it or not, I like how you select the effects and the effect time/parameter via the touchscreen better than how you do it on the DJM800 for some reason. The best thing that I kept in my head was "do not touch the buttons on the left side of the touchscreen" (those are video FX) . Everything else was extremely easy to use. The mixer was EXTREMELY heavy which is awesome, it totally feels like a solid piece of gear vs. a hollow mixer with some lights on top. Now, if you were to see it for the first time in a club, and hadn't ever used Pioneer gear in the past, I could see someone freaking out a tad. Granted that would mean they would probably not use the effects so it'd be very easy to show them how to mix on this thing in less than 30 seconds.


I was hangin with Eddie Halliwell @ that show and he couldn't believe how crazy it looked all lit up in the dark.


I joked with the other resident who plays at the club with me, and told him to give me his opinion of the mixer in the pic below


It was a halloween show which his why the weird skeleton prop is in front of the decks, lol

i like the fact that pioneer finally pulled their heads out of their asses with their phono channels. used to be only channels 1 & 2 had phono preamps, now 1 & 4 have pres which is nice for symmetry.

i think its a disgrace to build a unit like this and not give it high definition inputs. for 6k it should have HDMI or at least component on EVERY channel.

You're not taking into account the HUGE bandwidth requirements for HDTV. To simply pass it through and mix it would be one thing, but this device is capable of real-time video manipulation, effects, etc.

Doing that on an HDTV stream is very resource intensive.

Not to mention that there's simply no source material, or a player capable of producing an HDTV stream. The current DVJ's have 3 gigs of RAM PER DECK just to manipulate and buffer a DVD stream, doing that with HDTV would be cost prohibitive.

So while HDTV might be the future, it's not feasible for this class of equipment today.

Besides, DVD quality is pretty damn good, especially for visuals...

Also keep in mind that they've probably been developing this mixer for YEARS... so the HDTV technology was even less available when they started...
