I use the gain basically for cueing (i have monitor balance on my mixer but im still not used to it) and in case one source was lacking in volume and needs to be boosted up!

it doesnt really matter...

mixing is a personal style(or it should be!!)

however you choose to transition is up to you! upfaders seem to be the popular choice, but whatever you like is what you should do.

There is enough control you just need to make minute movements. For me it offers more control than non rotary faders.

You don't say? I never would have known this if you hadn't pointed it out to me.

my problem with mixing with gain knobs is cueing can begin to be a bit of a bitch.

How so? I know yes it is best to have rotary faders, but if you don't you can use the gain to approximate the feel. No reason to turn the gain all the way down. Just cut it a little bit so when you throw the channel fader you don't spike the gain structure on the master channel. Then use it so smoothly bring in the next song. It is a lot easier to control turning a knob then pushing a fader

Crossfader. For all this talk of "greater control" with upfaders and gains, from what I've heard in the music promotion section, most of your physical mixes all sound alike.

Think about it for a minute. When using the crossfader you're forced to adjust the level of one channel dependent upon the other channel. Using the upfaders you have more control because you can control the levels independent of each other. And it is easier to control the turn of a knob than the push of a fader. So yea you will ALWAYS gain more control when moving from a single switch individual switches. It is fairly obvious.
