The "rubber band" theory of the universe is currently out of favor with cosmologists.

Indeed, if time isn't linear, then asking what created the universe becomes a meaningless question, because creation implies linear time.

Damn, these giant stars really made us feel tiny

Anyway, this is the kind of stuff I try not to bother with. Not because it isn't interesting, quite on the contrary, but I just can't grasp physical existence at all.

Edit: What's up with those names? "VY Canis Majoris"? Couldn't they have chosen something like "Gigantic Hotness in Canis Majoris" or "Billy Canis Majoris"?

On second thought... Black holes shred the shit out of matter when consuming it. How could the matter in our known "universe" have been sucked into a super massive black hole and still be intact? Or does that mean the black hole was created around us or something? I'm so confused

Its kind of funny thinking of black holes being inside of black holes

In essence yes. It is said that the universe came into existence out of nothing (singularity) and will go back into nothingness. Such cycles will repeat endlessly. Pretty much sounds like the big bang at the beginning of time. Dunno how the physical predictions match up with the way the end of this cycle is predicted in the philosophy.

+1, it's really hard to imagine something as big as VY Canis Majoris...
It's really out of any imaginable proportions.
But still, I find astronomy very interesting.

I've always imagined that as a formating of a harddrive. Once upon a time, you just have to do it.

Maybe we live in someone's harddrive.

Oh well, I shouldn't drink too much of beer.

If there were answers to those questions, all the scientists and philosophers in the world would kiss your feet. No one knows dear. And if anyone does, I doubt you'll get the answers on a satirical discussion board.

The Big Crunch is caused by all the gravitational forces in the universe slowing down the expansion of the universe (which is proven in our universe), to the point where all bodies of mass no longer move outwards, but attract each other inwards. To the point of a huge crunch of mass, exploding into a big bang, and creating another universe.

I've never heard of the "Big Crunch", I have however heard of the "Big Rip"

In the sense of a balloon, it can only expand so much when its being filled up and then it reaches it's breaking point. The idea of the big rip is that the universe will eventually reach it's breaking point and rip itself apart as it continues to expand.
