its the hard or soft letter and i forget which letter is represented in the english alphabet as the apostrophe. i always mix those two up since i dont really speak anywhere near as good as you.

I don't speak Russian, I actually really suck at it. I just remember rules and whatnot and at one point could read decently...I get so caught up in rules I start to confuse myself. Every now and then I browse through Gazeta or when I'm feeling ambitious translate some text but that's about it for me...I lived with Russians for two years so not being around them doesn't help either...they were hardcore Russian.

Anyhow, as for the hard sign there is no need for it so it isn't written. You are probably right about the soft sign.

To his defense, Trump didn't even really look like a bum.

Oh, that's true, there are quite a few universal ways to Romanise the Cyrillic alphabet

What I think they're complaining about is the fact that whoever translated that might have just copied and pasted all insults he could find, and forgot to choose just one of these systems. For example, z was spelled "hui", "khui" and "hooy"... and r was spelled both according to the Cyrillic alphabet (tvoyu) and phonetically (tvayu).

Well, the sound is usually represented by only one of the two. Example "sObaka" () is the correct spelling yet you pronounce it as "sAbaka" (), you don't pronounce it as it's spelled unless you're putting some kind of dramatic emphasis on the word and you don't spell it as you pronounce it.

imo you spell it like it's pronounced when not using Cyrillic because when you write a foreign word in Russian you write it as it sounds not as it is written in English or whatever language. My Russian entry visas have my name written two different ways but both are how my name sounds and does not correspond with how it is actually spelled.

They use transcription when translating last names from Cyrillic. If you're name is spelled "Korhin" in Russian they're going to translate it as "KOrkhin" (most likely), not "KArkhin". That's my only point. There's an adapted standard on how to write Russian words using latin alphabet, although it's not official it exists - translit.ru has all the conversions listed.

they translated my name into Cyrillic, I'm Kenyan-American...either way I guess from our TA conversation we should just agree that most don't use a standard conversion.

Oh man, apparently I can't read . Into Cyrillic is a different story, although the outcome is the same - they totally bastardize the original name/word .

My point wasn't conversion related at all. My point was that people can't spell . It's more of a personal rant actually. Shit that's written above is usually written by posers who are only versed in the profanities of the Russian language (and badly at that) and consider that as the main link to the culture.
