Buffalo Bills To Play 8 Games In T.O.
Wednesday January 30, 2008
By Dan Ralph The Canadian Press

The average price would reportedly be C$250 a game and fans would have to purchase all eight tickets and pay for them upfront.

$2000 for some football games?

..so according to that article, the only support system that the CFL has is its fans in the GTA?

I don't think so. If there wasn't a team in Toronto or Hamilton I think the league would survive just fine.

If they were really concearned, they could move the CFL season around.

Instead of playing from June - November, they couple play from April - September or something like that so there wouldn't be any major conflict.

The attendance for 2 of these NFL games in Toronto will be more than the argos get all season.

I never knew.....

We shall console each other, in the corner of a dark room, and tell stories of our glory days when Marino was at the helm.

The future looks bright for Miami!!!

P.S. - if it was Buffalo vs. Miami in Toronto, I would pay $400, easily.

This is an invalid argument. The NFL gets paid for the television rights to all games and that revenue is shared equally by all teams in the league.

But it is a valid point.....the amount of money paid for TV contracts is ridiculous......especially for NFL. The Canadian television market wouldn't even consider paying the dollar figures that the states pay for these contracts. Any TV revenue made by the canadian market would be so minor it would be like throwing a Gherkin down the 401.

It's not valid because it is not an argument against Toronto getting a team. Teams don't need the financial support of local television because because the league has national contracts and the television revenue the local teams get is from those contracts. It doesn't matter if a Canadian Network pays for television rights or not because the team will get the same amount of money anyway.

The real problem with putting a team in Toronto is the anti-trust exception that the NFL enjoys. That exception could be voided by international expansion, which would open the door for competing leagues in the US. If Toronto is not allowed an NFL team this will likely be the reason for it.

From the NFLs perspective it is an argument against Toronto getting a team.....there is little to no financial gain for bringing a team to Toronto. There are too many US cities that can support a team and bring in larger financial numbers then Toronto ever would.

The best case senario for Toronto is basically what is happening....a shared team between Buffalo and Toronto.....its close enough to Buffalo that fans will come from Buffalo and you increase the fan base in Toronto because Toronto is a home town city....they will jump on bandwagons just because one drives by.

I agree that the problem is due to there not being enough finacial gain; however, that is due to the risk of the anti-trust exception going bye-bye rather then due to minimal television revenues. If it were just revenues then there would be no downside for the NFL because any additional revenue from television and merchandise would be a bonus (since the only risk to the league would be the other teams having to support the Toronto francise financially, which does not seem likely given the market Toronto would have).
