Get yourself a nice job and have music as a hobby(like i do, better than collecting fuckin stamps innit),so your not relying on the money.

Then if you do make any ££ it is a bonus and you can get new software or a bit hardware or whatever, do it for the love of music not the doubloons

Famous producers get a lot. But if you're (just a bit) less famous it isn't enough to live off.

You'd be better off having a proper job and doing music production as a hobby as someone else said.

Lets assume the average Beatport track is US$1.75 (halfway between $1.50 and $2.00). Thats $5,250 in revenue for Beatport, for 3,000 sales. Let's say Beatport has a markup of 50% (this is what iTunes has). That's US$2,625 revenue left for the label. I'm going to guess that the artist probably gets somewhere around 5%. Thats US$130.

Basically, you wouldn't want to rely on Beatport. lol.

5%?
who ever signs a contract with the number 5% should be shot.
If ur track is for sale for 2$
u and the label make $1 and beatport makes $1, split that in 2 considering u signed a 50% contract and ur looking at 50 cents/download.
Still, like Rob said, unless ur hitt'n charts monthly, u need a side job

Word. Say you're a Tool fan, so you buy all their albums, spending a grand total of about 60-80 bucks. You go to one of their shows and you'll probably blow more than that on a ticket.

Let's just say I have a couple of friends doing gigs for 10k people and after having released some quality tunes on renown trance labels they still don't earn enough money to move out of their parents house. Of course it is doable, but mostly this requires you to be very active or big in either one, or even better, both the dj and producer scene. Otherwise it pays poor.

Another guy in my `social network` recently bought a house, he makes pop/rock/trance tunes all week. And he's good at it. Yet almost nobody knows his name outside the trance scene... And he doesn't release that much trance tunes as he does with the pop/rock ones.

Overall it's pretty hard to live off music. It's far from impossible though.

I heard that most mainstream acts are lucky if they break even on a tour. Most of their profits apparently come from merchandise sales, because once they've paid for the flights + transport of their equipment + renting a venue, they've laid out some ridiculous cash. Its a bit different for DJs who only have to carry one case around with them and usually don't rent a venue, but get paid by the venue. Which actually makes me wonder where on earth mainstream acts DO make their money

Yea. I read this article about Chicane few months back. Don't know exactly what was written but I think he had to sell his ferrari car and drop 400k or so pay for the release & tour of his new album....

Yeah the entire story with chicane has made me ever since behind the sun, not least the music he's produced since.

Hello!

Hi there. First post.

I'm starting with djing/production but only as an hobbie. I'm doing it because I love electronic music, mainly trance, and I always wanted to produce. The creativity involved in producing music is something that always fascinated me, there are no limits to what we can do with music.

However, I have my job and I wouldn't rely on music for a living, it's not a safe bet.

It's not about the money, it's about the music, at least I believe so.
