well we went to the same highschool and honestly all i learned was perfect english, how to write and cite good essays, literature from books and and history. everything else is pretty much blur..like i couldn't go back and do some calculus problems without being explained again to remember.

But most importantly, the friends i made in High School are still my best friends now.

I think school, (Public or Private) is a necessary stage in socialization.

I knew one home school kid, and he was naive as shit.

i had a pretty good AP history teacher, so i learned alot of stuff there. also learned alot of lit stuff due to a fantastic professor (stanford)

i didnt really learn math stuff because i suck at math. but i think being able to write good, knowing history, and classic books is essential. it seems all useless but if we did not have that background, we would be complete tools in college. you also develop good problem solving skills.

That's the reason why some parents seem to opt for home-schooling: it protects their children from "the dirty society". That religious zealot I mentioned, for example, was outraged because her daughter's former school once said that "gay people are not freaks"...

That's probably because generally religious freaks home-school their children to protect them from Satan. It's a vicious cycle.

I know a really hot chick who has a small restaurant in the building I work in who was home-schooled. Gotta tell you, I feel really sorry for her. No social life, whatsoever. She's 26 and her parents don't let her date. It's a shame, because she's really hot.

I also feel sorry for her poor little siblings who also work at the restaurant (it's owned by her parents). The little ones are like 14 and 15 years old and they're working all day long and get home-schooled on the weekends. Some of the weirdest people I've met.

I was home schooled for a few years of elementary school. Dont do it, it sucks. I didnt learn a thing, I would just look up any answers when my mom left the room.

Yes, your kid will turn out weird if you home-school them. I'm not sure that's necessarily a bad thing, though.

Public schools were created to get kids accustomed to shift work, obedience to bosses, and boring tasks done in a standardized way. Industrialists wanted dependent, dependable, and compliant workers for factories, and the schools were designed accordingly. The schools had the additional (beneficial?) effect of breaking down religious and familial loyalties, concentrating the emotional energies of the individual on work -- and on its obverse, consumption. And by surrounding kids for most of the day with people their own age, schools provided the soil of "generational provincialism" from which, years later, the quite lucrative "youth culture" would sprout.

The stuff about "preparation for citizenship in a democracy" and "broadening minds through liberal education" was mostly a pleasant facade, so pleasant that quite a few people actually bought it.

The factories that the industrialists had in mind aren't as important anymore, but schools still serve the same basic function.

Another of the triumphs of public schools was to get people to see "education" as something that had to be accompanied by "schooling," when in fact the two aren't necessarily related, especially once schools started the practice of "social promotion."
