But even if you were to drive it over the border, would you not still have to get the safety here??

Yes, among other things. It's a long and tedious process, but you do save yourself quite a bit of money.
I'm anxious about the Christmas shopping season that's about to hit and all the Canadians going south to buy all their shit. Would really plant a firm kick in the retailers' asses who refuse to adapt to the changing economy. I love how they whine about consumers using their purchasing power to the full extent. Oh noes, GM you poor thing, you can't change $8000 more for the exact same product 200km north. Fuck em. It's the same as with the recording industry (who are also adamant to evolve in a changing landscape), and the same thing is going to happen to them - ultimately, consumers have the last word on prices.

Oh, didn't see this part of your post, Jenn. No, you are not required to change everything to km. As long as your speedometer has the km marks on it (and even the American cars still have smaller km/h markings on the speedo), then you are fine. I'm still driving with Fahrenheit and miles everywhere. |
Talked to a guy today that supposedly is in the know. Hilarious part is that even IF the gauge is in miles (no kilometer reading at all), all you need is stickers that note the kilometer speed (literally, can be glued to the glass of the gauge). No need to replace the whole thing.
As for safety, he also mentioned that you need an airbag sticker in both languages (you know, the ones typically under the visor or something like that?) Well, for THAT, the dealers charge you hundreds of dollars (in the US, if they know you're border-shopping). Better to just skip it there - you can buy a couple of stickers here in Canada (at Chrysler for example, for $5/piece), and glue them on yourself. Make sure you have them before you leave for US.
