By the way, this article was from FEBRUARY 2007.... The incident you were probably looking for (because of the game cancellations this weekend) is a different article... A cop stopped a group of kids at a rest stop coming from the game, and his gun "accidentally" went off and shot a fan in the neck, so a few games were cancelled because of the riot they thought would ensue...

it must have linked up from this weekends story. i was actually referring to the riots in rome, but i did intend on linking the article that was posted.

yea it's a real shame. poor guy wasn't doing anything at all. complete error. today at school my classes wouldn't stop talking about it, so i dropped my lesson plans and we had a discussion about what happened, why, soccer mentality/mob mentality.. i mean with italy, the soccer madness has its roots in italy's history and regional divisions, before it was united as one country in 1862. people are verrry territorial and if you damn their soccer team, it's really like cursing god out to a muslim. anyway, my class had some interesting view points (most of them are around 17 y/o, all of them except for a few girls follow soccer) and they think that this type of mentality will never change unless the current government changes, tho i'm not exactly sure what they meant by that (didn't have time to get them to explain what they meant in italian, esp. since english is enforced as much as possible in the classroom.)

Probably that every government up til now is from the north, be it Milano or Torino or Venezia... They're all born in the north, schooled in the north... The second someone from Roma (who has a genuine interest in the southern regions), or anywhere south of that, is elected (which noone really seems to be able to accept), things will change... There will be a woman or black or foreign president before the majority voters of places like Milano or Torino elect someone from Napoli... Just like the average American thinks Italians are always involved in the mob, people from the north, as open-minded as they seem, still think a president from the south is going to be involved with the mob too... It's funny considering their last prime minister, Berlusconi, is the shadiest one they could have chosen...

And yeah, the more I hear about this story, the more I feel bad for the officer... A mistaken shot has resulted in nationwide violence and he's going to be haunted by this for the rest of his life... He shot a bullet in the air to stop everyone from fighting, panic ensued, and as he ran and put it back in the holster, BAM!... The one in a million chance that it hit somebody, that chance happened, and I can only imagine the hell this guy must be living through right now, not to mention the family of the victim.

or you can feel bad for the family of the deceased guy. what do you know, another cop who messes up someone's life because he thinks he has to save the day everyday and become involved in something that would have fizzled away without his intervention. i know it's his job, but what the hell was he doing firing a warning shot. moron.

EDIT: moron wasn't directed at you marcello. i just read that again and saw how it could have looked.

I assume that the same NSP's apply to Cops as they do to soldiers...If so,,the cop is gonna end up in jail for a long time...It's fucking sad 'cos it's in the line of duty but at the same time it's rudimentary errors that cost a dude his life...

the cop gets no sympathy from me. if he couldn't handle a gun his ass shouldn't have been a cop to begin with.

NSP,s = Normal Safety Procedure..

1...Who the fuck holsters a firearm without applying the safety catch...

2...What goes up must come down..Discharging firearms into the air is fucking dangerous...Bullets come down as easy as they go up and just as quick...

No, you guys are right... I read and interview and felt bad for him and replied shortly after, but I just imagined myself as the family of the victim, and that's even a worse situation to be in... Truly senseless death...

steven-neil is also a physicist. actually, at each point in elevation, the bullet should have the same velocity on its descent as it had on its ascent. (minus any wind resistance).
