Sovereignty is necessary to keep the peace. Sovereignty is a respect for a nation to govern themselves. Without sovereignty, who is to say America doesn't have the right to invade Iraq?

Check & balances is essential to a fair democracy. If all power is consolidated into one group of hands, then who is to stop them if they feel they must rule with an iron fist? Balance of power is necessary in this world. Look at the Middle East. Iran wasn't so much of a rabble rouser before 2003, because they had Baathist Iraq to worry about. Then the US screwed up that balance of power and opened up a power vacuum that Iran probably sees as an opportunity.
