Yeah, that's pretty much what I do too. It seems like you can stay focused on the mix more if you use both phones and monitors.

they work very well, at least the better models, on low and constant noises. On planes for example, they work great for the engine noise, but for music, with irregular noise, and more than just low rumbles, I doubt they'd work anywhere near as well.

still would be good if they did, to be able to have the headphone levels lower instead of cranked to overcome outside noise would save a lot of people's hearing
