First off, Facebook is not 'public', but I know what you meant to say.
Second, I don't see how people could be pissed off if they only include college friends or work colleagues in their network. I don't have any high school kids in my network and everything is just fine for me.
BTW, truncated profiles are rolling out soon. Basically, you'll get to view your friend's profile without seeing the 30 junk apps they have installed/embedded into their profile. That will make for much better navigation and eyesore reductions (you can manually view their apps if you wish in 'tabs').
Anyhow, traffic, ad contracts and an insane $15 billion valuation certainly suggest that this service is going anywhere but downhill.
