There are quite a few digital distributors out there nowadays. Check out this statement:

from Beatport Question
I want to sell my releases on Beatport. How do I do this?
Answer
We think it is very important to be the definitive home of dance music and to accommodate as many new labels and talent as possible. However, at the current time we are not taking on any new label partners. We thank you for your patience as we work to bring on more new labels in the near future.
because there are so many labels and releases now, it's overwhelming. So Beatport will only accept releases now through distribution channels. Also, it would be extremely time consuming and a nightmare to get all the material for your next release to all the retail sites. My distributor send all the releases for my label to over 100 websites. And they do it quickly and accurately! They also promote your releases and try to get them featured on the main pages of retail sites. So for a small fee (15%) distributors do a lot of work for you in the digital realm!

By the way, if you wait a couple weeks the prices almost always fall to 1.99/1.49€, except for some greedy labels like Pryda. This makes sense to me: if you want to be the l33t dj which plays only brand new tracks, you can pay more for the privilege - if you just want to play good music and don't care much about the tracks being new, there's plenty of others to choose from (although I guess it is annoying when that track you REALLY REALLY have been looking forward to, just comes out at 2.49€).

Ok, fair enough. I didn't realise there were already 100 websites out there selling electronic music.

Don't look at me, I haven't bought music in ages... (this is going to change next year when i graduate -> get a job -> start getting paid, i promise!).
But sometimes the choice to download for free illegally isn't even there. Many tracks aren't exactly easy to find in P2P, unless you have access to all those ripping groups FTPs and stuff. Also unless you only play Tiest0r and Ferry. Personally I occasionally search on Beatport for some obscure/old shit that I can't find on P2P, so I add to the shopping cart until some day I decide to buy it - the cart is almost reaching 200 euros now.
On the other hand if you are a real DJ and get paid for your gigs, you really shouldn't be downloading all your stuff... that's basically making money out of stolen goods. Like I said, if it's 2.5€ at the date of the release, and it isn't one of those "must buy" tracks, wait a couple weeks. Is it really necessary to play all the spanking brand new music? Leave that to the "big rich djs"...

The price is set by the retail site, not the label. Beatport charges $2.49 for exclusive tracks that are not sold anywhere else.

again, it sucks that you choose to be this way because people such as myself can't "make a living" out of music alone and have to resort to other day jobs to sustain life. This takes away time to focus on new music and other related label/production activities. To each their own but if you like it, please buy it.

I don't really understand what's the big deal about this € 2.50, when other shops are even selling exclusive mp3s for 2.5 in pounds... And besides, if you really love a track, is € 2.50 really that much for something you will enjoy for a longer period?? A cup of coffee can be more expensive these days...
And as already mentioned, if it's too expensive for you, just have a little patience and I'm sure in a month you will be able to find it somewhere for a cheaper price
(Moreover, Beatport getting rich Can't believe the closing of the Vonyc download store has not got anything to do with disappointing sales...)

That's what you think.

You must be EXTREMELY new onboard. Those "big rich djs" were originally small-time wannabes like the rest of us. Stop wasting your time here, and go argue somewhere where you actually have some backing to your argument other than "I don't want to"
And great breakdown Seneca

I agree completely with your argument, but it sucks that any "producer" should be moaning about not being paid for his labour.
Shouldn't producing music be a hobby, rather than a breadwinner.
Are you satisfied only by grabbing $$$$$ that you think you deserve?
Or is it enough to have made that summers bomb track, and will be forever remembered for that.
