Actually that's upside down - it's supposed to be kick-Bass-kick-Bass, not the other way round. Mind you, Bud The Spud by Stompin' Tom Connors has bass-Kick-bass-Kick. (If you don't know who that is, just ask a Canadian.)

A "bubling" bass, like the once already sugested(the ones with notes on the 1/16th) are sweet for an uplifting trance tune but the kick-bass-kick-bass type still has its place. U wont hear a bubling bass on a dirty scot project tune! You just gota make the bass that suits the tune.

Lange - Drifting Away sequence




I havn't used an offbeat bass pattern for ages now - it just sounds cheap to me.
However, it can sound good if layered with other different bass patterns
