what a bad stereotype.
im big with the VW scene here and i'd say 80% of my friends drive a vw product, anywhere from a 1984 to 2008. cars break down, lets face it. no matter what car it is it will break down unexpected, be it a 150,000 w/e.
the reason i suggested vw is becasue the 2.0L engine is nearly bulletproof, ive seen these things last up to 700,000km
and i do agree they are expensive to maintain. BUT thats if you go to the dealer for parts, every single thing ive replaced has been ordered online for a 1/4 of the dealer cost
anyways i wont ramble about this anymore, i just dont like people bashing VW and their drivers.

Bought my Mom a 2004 VW Jetta TDI brand new, and haven't seen a car with so many electrical problems in my life. I will never buy a VW for myself nor recommend one to anyone.
Every month a light goes on.

Trying to trick their owners into thinking they're driving a Ford? LOL
It's been said over and over again, but DO NOT get that Neon. American cars are FTL these days. Once you hit 100k they break down every 3 months almost religiously. My dad bought American for 16 years and had constant problems with every car he bought. In 2001 we bought a 2000 Toyota Echo, 275k and we've only had to do a small repair on the front end.
Based on my experience and the experiences of my friends aim for a Japanese car, preferably a Toyota (Corolla's are sweet, and so are the ugly-ass Echos) or Honda (Civic or Accord), but Nissan or Mazda will both do you right. I've been driving a '95 Mazda Protege for over a year now and haven't had to do any work on it yet.
As for the VW comments, I've seen more than a few Jettas last forever. Golfs... LOL don't even bother, you can't afford those repairs.

Bullshit.
Those forces combine to create a soaking, boiling mudstorm on Valentine's Day.

Not sure if the new 05+ Jettas/Golfs fixed the problem but the #1 thing I don't get about the 04- design is that stupid strip of suede/whatever it is that lines ONLY the TOP of the doors (on the 4-door, not sure about the 2-door). It's this material that goes along the top of the door frames from front door to rear, and IT FREEZES THE DOORS SHUT EVERYTIME WITHOUT EXCEPTION!!!!! Any cold day, you leave the car outside, and there you go. You're not getting in your car without practically tearing the door off.
The mechanic at the dealership my Mom takes her car too said on days when the forecast calls for freezing rain/or rain followed by sub-zero temps, or snow in freezing temps, we should pour baby powder on that strip to avoid it from freezing.
