One should choose their words very carefully when criticizing a sex as being inferior in a certain field. The fact that the president of Harvard, quite possibly a geriatric blue blood who belongs to the good ol boys club, older then dirt, and from an era that espoused these believes openly in public is not the best source for biological differences between the male and female mind physiologically.

That aside, when SMC said not a lot of good music is produced by women, did you mean in the EDM realm or in general.

Generally speaking, you might simply prefer male vocals to female and therefor not like female produced music, which in case makes your opinion skewed anyway. If you simply dont think Lisa Gerrard, Sarah McLachlan, Feist, Portishead, Sarah Brightman, and others make quality music, then either you have an odd definition of good music or are sexist, or both.

In the EDM realm, others have already mentioned many talented female producers and djs, I would simply like to add K-Swing to that list of female DJs who can really put it down. Also check out a song she produced w/ Beber for a quality breaks track.

Finally, maybe the reason fewer women are in certain fields like mathematics, EDM, is due to a male bias against women that not only keeps aspiring ones from entering the business, but puts the kybosh on any interest some may have. Without a reasonable hope of being able to pursue an interest, not a lot of people tend to develop one anyway. And its kind of impossible to know about all the female bedroom djs out there.

If you are going to use a public forum for expressing biased points of views at least do so, though it may be lengthy and thought inducing, with reasonable arguments and facts to support your point of view so others can discuss with you on a semi-objective level, rather than resorting to I feel this and think that.

Female Dj's don't have to be good as long as they show something.

I said this in another thread about the same subject a while bacK;

I do not think women do as well with abstract music, as in instrumental stuff. They do better with song, and vocal based music.

They are terrific at song witting and singing, but not composing. Looking at producers in pop and in EDM, there is a huge gap in the number of good female producers and male producers.

There's not a single female producer I'd rate very highly, so make of that what you wish. There are however countless female vocalists that are amazing.

I just don't think they're too tuned in to what's ground-breaking, cutting-edge etc. Prog house, hard house and trance aren't the most innovative genres, so I don't see how meaningful this discussion could possibly be.

Females like vocals more... so they are probably gonna make vocal stuff more often. If for some reason they are making music they don't like they probably aren't gonna be too good anyway.

here's my two cents about female producers/dj's etc, since there are a couple of types of them, actually, no you have two. you have the ones that tries to get through without using their looks or the fact they are women to get booked etc etc. these women will get heavily critised for being crap dj's/producers and will be rated ugly even if they are attractive just because they don't want to demean their selves by playing the game.

then you have the other type, women who use their looks (even to extreme measures like 'portia surreal' who would never get booked normalwise). these women basicly ruin for the first type, especially clueless bints like portia surreal, and girls who just wave their hair and pout their red lips while the tracks aren't mixed properly or even go together at all etc etc. these women don't really do anything for the progress in a really maledominated business, infact they help the blokes out more than the girls.

when it come to production, there is alot of guys who fuel this aswell by helping 'the pretty girl' with their tracks and this helps to fuel the critism that females can't produce and need someone else to do it for them while they are putting on more makeup etc.

you have people like tatana that runs her own label and built a moderatly good reputation as a dj while all her tracks are produced by someone else (just to name some: reverb, andy prinz, dj spoke)

I have a theory about this and I think it especially applies to EDM production since that requires more skill than Djing.

Lets be honest here...there ARE cognitive differences between the sexes especially when it comes to the math and sciences. Why do you think so few women go into computer science or mathematics? Just look at the dearth of women in the computer science, mathematics, and engineering departments at most any univeristy

Even the president of Harvard acknowledged this when he said there are innate differences between men and women...and this might be one reason fewer women succeed in science and math careers.

This clearly ties into EDM production where great deal of technical/computer skill is required in addition to musical skill.

I dont know in what decade you are currently living (atlanta, georgia = redneck usa, and you never know in what century they are)

but if you look closely at statistics, in the vast majority of developed countries, there are more women than men in medecine, engineering, and other such fields at university level

Partially true.

The only person who really made sense in this thread is eletrikal.

Culture > Nature
Culture > Nature
Culture > Nature
Culture > Nature
Culture > Nature

Women, in society, are driven towards girlish attitude, in the "industry" wants them to be divas, pop idols, and such. From a very young age, they are conditionned to certain expectations of their gender, just like men are.

They are not worse at music than men

Culture > Nature
Culture > Nature
Culture > Nature

Biologically, there are no cognitive differences

Culture > Nature
Culture > Nature
Culture > Nature

The conclusion of the original poster. Even though his opinion might reflect a reality of music industry today, the difference between men and women in music is not biological (cognitive), it is cultural.

All in all, you are just plain wrong
