Just to clarify; Nexus is not only a rompler. It's a also a fullblown synth, but they chose to hide the tweaking part, because well... they make much more money selling expansions that way

The saw you hear when you open nexus - pure synth waveform. And there are many, many more pure synth sound there; basically if a patch loads extremely quickly it's most likely not a sample.

I like Nexus, I think it's a great synth for dance music, but it's way too expansive; especially once you go down the 'expansions' route and it's limited in functionality; i.e. why on earth down they sample all their gear with filters fully open and then use the Nexus envelopes to shape the sound?
Instead, the cutoff does nothing on most patches and you are basically stuck with the same sample as everyone else (using nex). Well, at least you can turn off the oscillators/samples in nex 2, but it would be really nice if you could stack those with for example the synth's oscillators or library samples. Or even with other patches.... Maybe nex3

I don't like Vanguard. It sounds too metallic for me. But for some sounds, it's great I guess.

The best synths for dance (especially trance) right now are Sylenth, Zebra and Nexus. The first two if you know how to make patches, and the last one if you just want ready to be used great sounds with a single click.

i heard so much about nexus too when i tried it i was very disapointed when i found out it was just a rompler like a few years ago .

I like synths where you can create your own sounds like absynth or V- station.

if you want to create your own sounds id stick with vanguard.

maybe try reaktor.

Think of Nexus as a Trance-In-A-Box , basically most of the sounds that you need to make that trance sound can be found in Nexus and it's expansions. Nexus is a rompler , which means it loads sounds from it's ROM. You can't manipulate the sound to a great extent , but only do simple stuff like ENV mods or filter cutoffs.
But that also mean your gonna sound like everyone else who uses Nexus. Thank god there are producers who don't do that , or else we are gonna go like "Hey didn't I head that epic lead somewhere?"

Vanguard , on the other hand is a construction kit , which means the bricks are laid there for your hands to get dirty on. Vanguard is a Subtractive Synth(It's still a Synth) , so any sound that is produced from the init patch can be morphed to anything that does not exceed the power of Vanguard. But of course , Vanguard still has presets. Think of it as calling the contractor because you don't know how to lay the bricks!

That's all.

Vanguard at first sounded like an overlysynthetic piece of crap to me. But after 2 years of using this synth (among many others) I can guarantee you it deserves a position in your line up for softsynths. Remember, the simpler the sound the more flexible its application.

Exactly.

I love vanguard. It does sound very metallic but with much tweaks you can get some really good stuff out of it.Nexus I can say is more difficult to use as you cant push the envelope like vanguard.

Vanguard = great for plinky plonky plucky stuff.
I've used Nexus once at a mates house, didn't like the lack of control - but I didn't spend too long on it so it's probably not a fair review. But it did have some very nice trancy sounds.

My concern with Nexus is everyone and his dog has it, couple this with limited editing and everone sounds the same. Now, I know many many people have Vanguard too, but I don't use the presets so hopefully avoid sounding too similar to other artists - as far is possible. I cringe when I hear a well known preset on a track, there is a really obvious Vanguard one on Simon Patterson 'Us', he even left the LFO modulation on it which is the real signature of the preset.

I love how people claim you can't be original with Nexus. Makes me wonder if they ever used the synth.
Creativity isn't anchored soley to the amount of parameters a synth has, in fact, creativity is an infinite representation of the mind upon whatever tool is used to explore it.
If you use Nexus, creativity is being limited by your mind, not the synth, so stop blaming the synth because it doesn't have enough parameters thats preposterous.

"I'm more creative then you because my synth has more knobs" uhhh no you're not, you're just an idiot.
Remember, creativity is determined by the mind not the number of knobs you can twist. Thats def called scarcity thinking, "I can't be creative because I don't have 5000 parameters", how about "I can't be creative because I'm not creative". Sounds a lot more accurate to me.
