yeah but that's a rumour
just like there were rumours warner was going hd dvd. I suppose they would've, had HD DVD paid them more than they got from BDA for bluray ($500 Mil USD?)

Sounds like HD-DVD should have a "no givseys backseys" clause in theirs

TOKYO, Jan 8 (Reuters) - Paramount studios is poised to drop its support of the high-definition DVD (HD DVD) format after Warner Bros studio said it would back the competing Blu-ray format, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.

The loss of support from Paramount, which is owned by Viacom Inc (nyse: VIA - news - people ), would likely deal the final blow to the HD DVD format backed by Toshiba Corp (other-otc: TOSBF.PK - news - people ) and put an end to the format war, the newspaper said on its Web site.

Time Warner (nyse: TWX - news - people ) Inc's Warner Bros studio on Friday said it would exclusively release high-definition DVDs in Sony Corp (nyse: SNE - news - people )'s Blu-ray format, marking a major setback to the HD DVD camp.

Blu-ray discs outsold HD DVD by nearly two-to-one in the United States last year, but HD DVD had secured major allies in August when Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation SKG (nyse: DWA - news - people ) Inc said they would go exclusively with HD DVD.

But Paramount is understood to have a clause in its contract with the HD DVD camp that would allow it to change sides if Warner Bros backed Blu-ray, the Financial Times said, citing people familiar with the situation. (Reporting by Nathan Layne)

wow what a coincidence, sunrise who told ps3 owners to get a 'real console' is backing hd-dvd.. no surprise there

lets face it mate bluray fits more, has a faster read rate, is outselling hd-dvd, and nearly has all the studio's support

you lose.. get the fuck over it

it used to... like a year ago, hd dvd supports (insignificantly) a size 1gb bigger

thanks to idiots and anti-competitive practice by sony? (e.g. how many months was it before hd dvd's were sold in retail in australia with all those major chains having an exclusive contract to sony)

quote:

yes, sadly it does, and for two reasons.
1) it's not the consumer format - studio's like that region coding is enforced - where as on hd dvd it's not (this enticed Fox to go bluray), and you can't create a backup of the disc
2) they paid out a shit load of money (such as in the case of warner bros, reportedly $500 million..)

you lose.. get the fuck over it

it's not over, but it is a major blow.. the rumours of paramount going bluray only too would likely to spell the end, well for movies anyways. Maybe HD DVD will become a cheap data storage format instead, who knows. but I'll certainly never get a movie in bluray.

so now, be constructive or stfu
