I understand where alot of you are coming from, but while this poll has illustrated that the majority of TAs in Vancouver want to see Menno de Jong, it has also illustrated something else...that majority is no more than 20 or 30 TAs in all of Vancouver. Now I COULD still bring Menno to a club. But to amortize his 3000usd cost i would have to make tix $100 each just to break even; as Greg already mentioned the less people there are to support, the more prices must be inflated. Then no one comes.

However if there were 30 TAs on here who could guaranatee that they would purchase 5 tix EACH @ $20 a ticket then not only could we do the show, but it would also mean you as TAs could sell/give tickets to your friends (maybe people who like Trance but have never seen a live DJ event) and get people other than the core TA crowd to show up. So you can increase you social club circle, encourage raised attendance and in the long run be able to have more trance club events with acts other than the usual Armin/PvD/Ferry.

Doing something like this would make it feasable for us as promoters, allow you to see more of the acts you enjoy, and generally make the event more enjoyable for the visiting artist (no DJ wants to play for 30 people at an out-of-town gig).

I'd definitely go, and I would get a few of my friends to go. That's 5 people already.

Alje, I really have to applaud your effort and honesty on the subject. Finally you can see our level of frustration. I agree that you (Twisted/Cargo) need to make money and can see your point/hesitation as to book a non-commercial Trance Dj. With that said, I really think your underestimating the market. For example take a look at what Blueprint is doing, they started off bringing in BIG Dj's ie. Sasha, David Guetta, Gabriel and Dresden...... now they have the public's attention and are trying a new formula by bringing in guys like Tiefschwartz, Ewan Pearson, Adam Freeland, Lee Burridge, Steve Aoki, D.Ramierez, and so on. All these Dj's I'm sure you can agree the general clubber ie. (your Armin, PVD, Ferry audience) wouldn't even know! Still Blueprint packs the place every Friday night at Celebrities and that's another thing they do it weekly! So I guess what I'm trying to say here is, give us TA's and the market a chance. Take a risk, you guys will be surprised and see that guys like Menno De Jong, Marcel Woods, Marcus Schossow, Andy Moor, and Above and Beyond could realisticly bring in a crowd. You got the TA's support and all of our friends (trust me some of us roll to these shows with big crews). You already got the promo company in Alberta willing to work with you (split travel costs) on bringing Marcus Schossow or any other future Trance Dj's to Vancouver. Anyways, enough of my random rambling. PM me Alje if you wish to discuss things more, I could potentially find you a partner to help offset the cost.

Blueprint nights are great, its great knowing you can go the same place every friday and have good music.

One thing I dont understand is how can promoters in Alberta bring in these guys? My friend from Edmonton says the trance scene there in way smaller then ours.

One point Alje missed is, even to bring in smaller names, to barely get 30 people to go see a name as big as Menno, even with promotion, it's hard to imagine being able to offset any cost, even just the cost of flight (nevermind any dj fee and/or hotel if required) for smaller, lesser known DJs.

Also, for those making comments about Blueprint, yes, it's working now, but lots of promotional groups have tried things like in the past. The only one that springs to mind that had any similar success was Arpy and Vivid Sessions. Like you mentioned, regularity, having a regular venue, time and date, all help. Knowing that there's always going to be music there, and having that stability, be it a big name or some kicking locals or nationals, is a definite plus. But unless the support continues and is consistent, some way or other, it will fail otherwise. Be it the club owner finds another avenue to make more money (top 40 always sells in this town), or the support dwindles, or the club owner doesn't make enough, or the promoters don't make enough to even break even, etc etc etc.

You ask for opportunities to prove yourself, well, keep showing up to events, bring your friends, fill these clubs to capacity, promote these things around at your work or school or in your social circles. If club owners see edm events as being profitable, it will make it easier for promoters to find venues, venues that are not only great for the audience but great as an experience in terms of presentation and music and overall quality. Thus far club owners have recognized that edm related events or residencies/regulars have had rollercoaster support, and they look for long term deals to insure they can pay their bills and make money, and what has always sold in this town is what gets their attention. Prove them wrong, go to events, and things might just change.

As above Blueprint has a regular venue - which also happens to be one of the best clubs in Vancouver IMO. One thing I have to point out with Celebrities however, is that in gaining that club you are already gaining a very loyal weekly club following. Nevermind what DJ happens to be spinning that Friday, there are automatically a couple of hundred paying people who go there on a weekly basis. This is why its such a great venue from a promotions aspect because it makes it that much easier to break even when aside from your following, the CLUB has a following.

We tried the same thing at Cyber, but many people have pointed out a distaste to that venue which makes it very risky to continue promoting shows there with only limited TA support.

We do Sonar almost on a monthly basis but for the most part they have weekly events for top 40/hiphop from Thursday to Sunday and I know people are hesitant to party Monday to Wednesday due to school or work commitments.

Union tried valiantly and could not sustain the momentum for more than a few months, even though they had a Friday or Saturday night, during which time they bought in some of the coolest non-commercial trance acts in the city. If we're able to get a weekly at a decent club again then you can be sure we'll try something, but it would require constant and consistent support even on dates where there would just be locals playing. Also clubs want to give the opportunity to promoters who specifically bring in a high dollar value crowd (people who spend 100 or more on drinks per person).

Yeah, Schossow said he'd come here, if someone would book him. But as me and Alje have pointed out, unless dominos fall in the right spots it's just not finanically sensical to do so. He's even got a gig after Edmonton in Toronto on the 22nd. So people out in Ontario, enjoy!

This is very key when it comes to Vancouver. When you look at all the clubs that tend to get in second-tier names, they almost ALWAYS have a dedicated following already. Lotus, Red Room, Celebrities...

There's the odd time one of the larger clubs will bring in such an act, but they're normally done on weekdays, and highly susceptible to word-of-mouth promotion. For instance, the Boyz Noise show at Plaza went off reasonably well for a Wednesday night, but remember the poor Rank 1 showing (also on a Wednesday at the same club, no less)?
