I agree with the NASCAR hating consensus as well. In fact, I am bored to death by all types of racing but NASCAR takes the cake for pure shitfest entertainment. I don't much care for basketball either, but wouldn't mind seeing the Toronto Raptors do well.

I've also never understood American's love for college sports. College football and College basketball...I mean, who cares? I couldn't give a fuck if Duke wins March Madness or USC wins the the Orange Bowl or the fucking Tiddly Wink Bowl (the number of bowls to win in college football is ridiculous) but that's just me. I also don't give a rat's ass about Canadian university athletics. I prefer to just watch the "professionals".

I can't stand the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Blue Jays, any team from Boston, Manchester United and Liverpool. I will never in my life support the Portuguese national football team and dont' care too much for Brazil or Italy either.

I'll try my best to answer why I think the US is obsessed with college sports:

1) States and Areas that don't have professional sports tend to be big on college sports, since that's all they got.

2) It's steeped in tradition ala footy in Europe. The environment is the closest thing you get in the US to going to a game in Europe. I'd argue that Duke v. UNC for hoops and Michigan v. Ohio State for college football are both some of the heated rivalries in the world for all sports.

3) Lots of gambling going on with these sports, especially March Madness.

You go to one of those schools and you'll easily figure out why its a way of life.

I'm obsessed with University of Florida sports.

Pro sports are sort of like an adopted fan base. People are fans b/c they live near "their" team. When you attend one of those schools you are part of the system, you gave that school your own blood, sweat, and tears. When UF loses a football game I go into total shutdown misery. I'm still upset over that Auburn loss at home. The LSU one I kinda prepared myself for it and UGA loss was a full on ass whooping. The Michigan loss I cared less b/c I was already focused on next season plus I was still bitter that the Rose bowl selected Illinois where we should have played them...

Ending my tangent... I can also say "We" lost a game today. I am an allum and I am part of that institution. I also do say it with my Buccaneers, but again I just like them b/c I grew up here in Tampa.

aside from women's tennis and the usualy Tenessee v. UConn NCAA Women's basketball game, I hate watching women's sports since it either puts me to sleep (WNBA) or hearing all the females on the stands screaming drives me off the wall (women's soccer and others)
