those two aren't necessarily mutually exclusive...

in most cases old stuff sounds very different to new stuff; not musically but in terms of production dynamics. for instance back in the old days of trance the mixdowns were alot simpler & the kicks alot softer, the highs less sparkly & everything not-quite-so-perfectly balanced.. if you're going to *JUST* play old stuff then that shouldn't be a problem, but combining new & old has the potential to sound awkward unless you can pull it off properly...

this is the main reason you get artists like sean tyas/greg downey etc doing remixes of older tunes that barely change anything musically.. they want to play well-known tunes but the originals don't merge well amongst their usual stuff because the kicks are softer & the mixdowns aren't as populated.. etc.

of course that could lead us onto a whole other debate about dynamics within a set.. and how some djs manage it better than others. that and there are plenty of old tunes that still don't sound dated so by no means does this argument apply all the time my current dj wallet spans a good few years at least

I think thats what makes a really great DJ. The ability to play any tune, no matter how old, and make it work and sound right.

Shame / Disagreement

Ugh, that song is ugly. I woulda thought Paul would be better than this, but I just realized how much he stuffed this song up. I was watching it for ages, just to hear the 'crescendo', but what did I hear? Falling by First State. Dude, that sucks. The Crescendo is the best part, and that applies to any trance song, but he makes it sound crap. I enjoyes the gouryella mix and that other one off limewire lol (It's named: Paul Van Dyke - Binary Finary [Dream Trance remix' 99].mp3 but I don't know if it actually was from him or some other guy/girl). Oh, I almost forgot, Key Cee's remix was probably the best in my opinion. honestly, I think he might have stuffed that up quite a bit. Sounded like he only used it to build up for 'Falling', which started off quiet. Naughty Paul. Let's hope he won't do that again.

To be honest I'd imagine he feels a bit daft after that. It would have been obvious that it didnt work.

I think PVD usually gets it spot on when he does stuff like that, but hey ho. I'm sure he wouldn't do it again haha

This does represent one of the problems of DJs using ableton and getting a bit too busy for their own good

You 100% definite about that? If so I will suddenly gain a lot of respect for Vandit. Its a monster.

Youtube vid of the second half -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3n9OlBIWRw

Its one of those rare cases where a 200x update works. (And bloody well too)

A little birdy told me but not 100% sure. Protoculture is playing with Paul when he tours down here next month. Will try catch up with him and let you know, but sure it is going to.

I'm still thinking of how bad it was to suffer through White Lies and Let Go. this is NOT trance. this is NOT what we was, and if he keeps it up, he'll need to be hit on the head with a bat (lol, visualizing that makes me laugh) to get him to his senses that he's not doing a good job at making 'pop' music. Actually, pop music these days sounds more like trance than ever. Britney Spears is an example, and look what she turned out to be! someone needs to tell Paul that people want to hear what he was, not what he is now.
