I'm not exactly sure how, so I'm going to give it one more go and if it dies again I'm going to move to another catfish species.
Hopefully that was an "upside down" catfish, as they can tolerate the aggressive cichlids, and the water chemistry. What works the best is anytime u add another fish...u have to take the rocks/caves and rearrange them so their thrown off and forced to take up another cave. That knocks out the aggression to allow the new fish to get acclimated.

Mine are much bigger. Also, that guy has a lot of red and his teeth are hidden by his gumline so I'm guessing he's juvenile. Mine have very subtle red around the lower gills, gold sheen to the body with gold flecks and very pronounced striping on the fins. They also have a little well-healed body damage from scrapping. I'll see if I can dig up a picture.
That one looks like a Pacu...almost the same as a pirhana but w/o the teeth. I would like to do a pirhana tank but their illegal here. Guess I could always order some and have em shipped overnight though.

It's funny because I think you hit the nail on the head with that one. I went and got 3 new cory catfish last night and the only cichlid in the tank giving them trouble is the only cichlid that has become territorial of his "cave" in my tank. My problem is that I have a lot of big rocks in the tank and it is almot impossible to switch it up to throw him off because of how large and how many there are. I may just have to move to another catfish species and hope it works out. I really hate to go through the whole "trial and error" process and have these fish die but I don't seem to have another choice!

Corys are the wrong ones, and they like neutral pH. Those Cichlids are going to Pwn them, and they usually start with biting the eyes out first! You want this type of cat:

They're illegal?
I guess to stop people from releasing them into local lakes?

yea Pirhana would take over all the canals and lakes around here. Oscars are already doing that from people letting them go.

Synodontis catfish. The common name is Upside Down catfish. Theres a few different types that are popular for aquariums, which is the one above and theres one that is all black with white dots and an emperor with longer sail and black and white stripes. The latter are way more expensive. The browns ones are like $10 average. Mine is always swimming around upside down 99% of the time.

Well thanks for the tip. I have 5 days to return my fish if they die. If they do, which I really hope that they don't, I will try out this species. If that fails then I may have to come to the realisation that I'm going to have to stick with a cichlid only tank, until the 1 guy hits the fan.
