hehe, half life demo.
We all didn't have too much money, but my friend decided to have me come over for a "revolution" in gaming. I was expecting doom like gameplay, but quickly surprised about "atmosphere." It's great!

We got to the part (in the demo) near the sewers and pipes. So i start heading down the hall and i don't see too much. i look to the left and see a jumping situation over some green ooze. I'm like "nah, go the other way." so i turn around and i hear this noise, but it's too dark to see. I turn on the flashlight and me and ALL my friends were screaming and i shot that mofo down with the shotgun. Such a great atsmosphere!
so anyways, i bought the game and so far it's freaked me out a lot more than RE and Silent Hill. i'm such a wussy

The first couple of times I played Resident Evil I was impressed with the atmosphere, but it hasn't aged well.

For my money the first Silent Hill is still the best in this department, just that initial sequence in the nightmare world to start the game is brilliant in and of itself, and then the game continues...great stuff.

To me good horror is less about gore and more about building tension over a long term period, and the first SH did that for me more effectively than any other game to date.

I finished playing through the Marine bit of Aliens Vs. Predator 2 for the fourth or sixth time the other day - now that game scares me shitless! Even if it gets somewhat shit towards the end and all the characters look hilariously constipated.
