Yep, this study supports what i said in my message. I certainly thing that it is related.

Well sociology and political analysis along with an addition of journalism do require certain intellectual skills, but it's not even fair to compare a 10 o' clock news anchor journalist's job to an architect like Santiago Calatrava.

I'm not saying it to be sexist or not anything like guys are better/or more intellectual than girls, not at all. But it's like Project-K said, girls just simply have another mentality. They live in another "world". That's why it's difficult for a guy to acquire an equivalent level of social intelligence as a girl. It is essential to them, but not as much to us, it's just how things work. Trust me I grew up with only my younger sister and my mom, I've seen it all, they are a strange creature.

I already acknowledged that tech-heavy things are still often considered "male," so it's kind of irrelevant to give examples that fall into that category. Indeed, I don't know many girls who do those things, but most girls I know are interested in intelligent things that fall outside the "tech" sector. Which leads me to wonder why such girls, who fall far outside the "superficial housewife" category, still generally don't have any interest in non-vocal music.

I'm already seeing this trend changing into the younger generations. I'm not seeing the same as for girls liking instrumental music.

I think it's some sort of psychological thing, female brains are known to be more emotional than males (i'm simplifying a lot things here for better comprehension), so somehow it links to them preferring more obvious manifestations of emotions like singing to the lyrics of a song, instead of just hopping your head to a melody over a beat. IMO.

They may be better in, shall we say, extracting emotion (easier, more readily) from lyrics/singing rather than melodies alone. They are not more emotional though, this is a stereotype in all its glory.

And i'm gonna agree with you and state that computers and video games have nothing (or indeed very little) to do with musical preferences.

I was thinking about about that too. I'm by no means an expert on the subject, but i believe girls are commonly more extrovert than males and thus are interpreted as more "emotional".

I don't think this thing with girls liking vocals has anything to do with society. I think, tell me if I'm wrong, girls are built different than guys, and their emotions seem to be different. Not totally different, but they go through things that guys don't. I really think it just boils down to genetics. I love vocals, if they fit right, and if I connect with the vocals. Again bringing up females emotions, they might connect more with music if vocals present. Remember everyone is different.

Lyric based music is traditionally far more simplistic and far more accessible. In fact you'll find most intelligent things are considered 'guy things', while all exclusively 'girly' things are rather superficial - something left over from before the 60s. Fortunately this is changing though.

loool

I'm into computers and video games and I'm a girl.

I like wordless music too, I don't mind...I do however PREFER songs with vocals, I admit.

Ok so they wouldn't like techno then

doesn't explain about the emotional stuff though (like SOME trance).

i've had the same experience with girls. at least with trance. if its trance it has to have vocals for girls to like it. but if you put a dirty house song and no lyrics it'll still get them to shake their ass most of the time. even true with minimal. trance is dead.
