LOL - That is so south coast DJ it's unreal he he. (Don't worry not poking fun, use the word myself from time to time).
To original poster.
You are probably making life a bit harder than it need be by doing this, better to work a bit more on your matching as in time you will probably find you don't need to do this.
But is it wrong?
Not at all. Don't know why but when I speak to DJs the majority of negative stories tend to focus around DnB DJs... weird.
Ultimately if your set sounded better than his because you had better music because of CDs (Wider range of tunes) and mixing was tighter, who do you think that dance floor is going to remember?
I always put key/bpm on cd's here. Because it makes easier on me.

I'm using traktor with beatgrids, and I don't need to beatmatch at all (besides hitting the "sync" button), so I'm getting a real good kick out of these replies!
Guess what, beatmatching is rather insignificant, and if I didn't have software to aid me (I still need to set the grids!) I'd pre-label the CD/Vinyls/Tapes/what the fuck ever with BPM and Key information. Music is math, so why not apply the formulas?
Track selection, reading the crowd, transitions - that's way more difficult and important than beatmatching.

Does anyone else do this?
This 'mate' of yours seems like a purist douche with a superiority complex. Do whatever you like to do as long as it helps you be a better DJ, odds are you're already better than him
Your mate is probably a terrible DJ if he needs to talk that much shit.

I side with the majority on this one, i don't feel it's cheating. it's no more cheating than drawing a line across the label for scratching. its no different than knowing from hearing the vinyl so many times that's it's slower than your other live vinyl or whatnot. just saves you a few moments so you can concentrate on other areas is my point of view.
