I really don't care about the caps... but 1 gig of downloads on the basic plan and 10 gigs on the most expensive plan? That's ridiculous, I can download 10 gigs in one day. I'd rather use dialup and get to download as much as I want than have cable and have to watch what I download.

I really hope sprint comes out with something, and other companies pop up... we need competition because with a little bit, rogers and bell will get crushed.

well.........I think they should get hacked...and taught a lesson. I also think that Satellite high speed doesn't seem that bad of an idea now.

But the best way to definitely hurt such big companies... is where it hurts most. They hit our pockets...we hit theirs. Boycott them... have a rally.... make them lose customers...business, and suffer monitary/revenue losses.

That's a good idea, but I doubt somebody could pull this off. The level of organization needed for something like this is just too high.
1G a month is just ridiculous, just recently they increased their service fee by $5, and for what? I STILL get disconnected now and than and my upload is STILL capped. And the sad thing about all this is that im forced to stay with Rogers because I have NO alternative.

ARGHHHH

I just got the following message in my inbox:

"Dear Valued Member,

To keep pace with our customers' evolving Internet usage needs,
Bell Canada, like all Internet service providers, must continually
invest in expanding and upgrading our network (my service has gotten worse).

Effective June 12, 2002 , your monthly rate for Bell Sympatico
High Speed Edition(TM) Internet service will increase to $44.95 (Bell is one of the most, if not the most, profitable companies in Canada)-- still one of the lowest rates for high speed access in North America.

Also, effective June 12, 2002, your monthly rate for Sympatico
High Speed Edition service will allow 5 Gigabytes (GB) download
and 5 Gigabytes (GB) upload of bandwidth activity. If your
bandwidth activity exceeds either 5 GB download or 5 GB upload,
an additional charge of $7.95 per GB will be applied to your Sympatico account.

AN EASY WAY TO MONITOR YOUR BANDWIDTH ACTIVITY
To give you the ability to monitor your monthly upload and
download bandwidth activity, we've created a simple tool: the
Bandwidth Activity Tracker. With this tool, you'll be able
to check how much bandwidth you've used. To get your bandwidth
activity update, just click on the link below.
http://memberservices.sympatico.ca/...=356&z=29622731

Thank you for choosing Bell Sympatico Internet service."

THIS SUCKS ASS

ugh, that's one nasty e-mail.. certainly don't want to be seeing one of those soon for Rogers I guess what they meant by "expanding and upgrading our network" is encouraging a lot of their customers to cancel their service, thereby making their hubs less congested for the rich folks that don't care about the price hike..

Not sure if this would work, but one way to fight this without giving up your connection would be for everyone to boycott one isp. This would force the boycotted isp to change something to compete. If Sympatico implements the cap first, then it may happen naturally (i.e. everyone will switch to rogers and sympatico will reconsider their descision).

I'm considering www.aei.ca 30$/month no caps, you have to buy the modem though. Anyone knows about a good DSL modem?

There are actually a few good alternatives out there for high speed connections, enough so that both Rogers and Sympatico can regret their decisions if everyone were to switch and support these lesser known companies. The only downsides are like purchasing the modem and possibly the connection not existing in the area. Hopefully, a boycott of these greedy companies (Rogers & Sympatico) would come naturally...

you know, if you're switching to get better service, fine... but if you're gonna switch just to piss off sympatico and try to make a statement, don't....

not enough people are gonna switch to make any sort of difference... most of the general public doesn't give half a damn. its like when human rights groups tell people to boycott nike cause they use chinese slaves to make their shoes (my cousin made your shoes you nike-wearing bastards! =P). sure, a couple people take it to heart, but not enough to make anyone change their ways. sympatico will just laff at your new, low budget isp and continue milking everyone else for money..... just a thought, =P.

dude!!! wake up, its the damn 5 gigs download limit! Everyone who downloads mp3, likes watching movie previews online will be pissed about it... I'm not talking about mad l33t people here...

People understand one thing, $$$. When they'll see a 5$ raise / month plus charges for bandwidth use, they'll want to switch.

30$+tx for some ISP is a lot cheaper than 45$+tx for sympatico... don't tell me you have to buy a 150$ modem!! I've been renting their half-assed modem for almost 3 years now!!! thats about 300$++ !!!!!

It all comes down to $$$... and I think Bell will feel it. Most of my friends are switching providers or dropping high speed internet all together!!

We'll talk about it in 6 months and see if Bell kept its caps...

Malek
