A lot of the early techno clubs like The Music Institute didn't serve alcohol, presumably for licensing reasons.

I think a lack of illegal drugs would have a far more dramatic effect:
http://www.chinstroking.com/2008/01/dance-drugs.html
However, in terms of alcohol:
- I think people would neither stay at the club longer or shorter. The lack of alcohol would allow their bodies to last longer, but the lack of drunkenness would make them moody and shorten their attention span.
- Less people would pick up (presumably).
- I think atmosphere would actually be improved vastly.
Personally, I rarely drink to get drunk, usually about once a month. It's only my love for music and heavy athletic background (endurance) than can keep me at clubs til 8am stone cold sober; I think very few people can do this without assistance, whether it's alcohol or drugs. Most people simply get too tired, or too bored.

I don't drink at all...so it wouldn't make a difference for me, plus it saves me a ton of cash.

The venues need to make money or they can't pay the bills.
Fact is clubs often make $$$'s off alchohol.. of course if they arn't bringing in revenue from that it could be other sources, like cover charges.. now if you can get trashed or pay a door price (maybe just if your a guy) what one would you go for?
All in all though I won't go into great detail although some things are clearly blatant - fact is booze bring in money - if not that they need to sell something else.. or run a charity location.. The thing is places that have other established stuff, pool halls, games rooms, restauraunts, coffee shops, etc.. still have some revenue. There needs to be some type of commercial traffic or someone with lots of cash that they are willing to throw into the idea for whatever reason.
Like the CIA may have interest in throwing raves in Afghanistan.. but really is that all too likely?
All kinds of ways to look at it.. but take places in Islamic countries.. they still may have the odd tourist club that has special liqour rules. but hardcore muslims generally don't drink.. but of course drugs were in part invented in the middle east and beer too.
Simple fact.. I'd rather have the doors open and sell.. but there is a balance between cover ladies nights, and sales.. or dread say a house dealer, runners or gang, mafioso traffic.
The money has to come from somewhere.. although people can run things for cheap or as a hobby.. big clubs as far as I'm aware ARN'T cheap.. if you look at the price of super clubs say in Ibiza.. Florida or New York or California for instance.. or resorts.. the things arn't cheap.. the lighting, and acts etc.. arn't cheap.. that is why they have fairly large ticket prices.. then with .. "superstar dj's" it doesn't make things any cheaper.
As for the balance between sales and covers? No idea.. Alchohol of course ain't the thing.. except it creates physical dependance and social conformity ... Like if you head out to raves.. some of them definately made huge on sales of water or other stuff I would think.. while clubs have sorta costly energy drinks.. or beverages.. but balancing the bar, at a profit level to cover staff can be issued.. headliners that can pack the place of course ain't gonna hurt.. of course running a club or deciding on a 0alcohol etc.. is questionable.. I've been to quite a few 0alcohol events (I think) maybe not.. and they played not very different from liscenced events or 19+ zoned events.
Of course after a few drinks you arn't thinking the same way personally I like being intoxicated sometimes.. othertimes not, personally I'd rather be intoxicated in a small social group then at a superclub.. it'd just be so damped out, but it would be a treat but if you are paying 100$ for a covercharge you don't want total amnesia unless you are there. If you are just going to get totally thrashed just spend it on 100$ of liqour and stand outside in the end it'll probably be the same effect. |
With every new post of yours that I read I get further proof that stupidity, like the universe, has no limits.
