Another old favorite of mine was Freespace 2, and it's free now. There's a bunch of groups making full mods for it like upgrading textures and polygon counts. Someone's making a starfox mod too. Should be pretty sweet.

the last decent space sim (shooter). not quite as epic and crazy as tie fighter, but certainly as great game.
and yeah, there's a BSG stand-alone mod for it too

If I play more hours a day can I reduced the number of years?
