I've been teaching myself (with a few lessons here and there from family members/friends) how to play piano and read music over the last few months. I think that being able to read and write music will be of use to me in some minor ways, such as i) making music with my buddy who is classically trained and ii) composing my own music/writing down the notes for riffs that I come up with and don't want to forget. I do think, however, that a huge part of the process is training one's ear, learning chord progressions, and hearing what notes/chords do (and do not) sound good together. In the end, I think that being able to read/write music won't benefit me in some incredible way when it comes to producing EDM; at the same time, I know that it is helping me progress in my piano playing abilities and without I don't think I'd have much of a clue what to do if a keyboard was placed in front of me. So, if it only helps me fine-tune my piano skills I'd say learning how to read/write music is definitely worth it. We'll see how long I stick with the formal training though. I should also mention that I am not allowing myself to jump into production until the fall since I am finishing up a M.A. degree at school; so, learning piano is a way for me to work at music in the meantime as well as prepare myself for the fall (when the real work begins).
