Just off Yonge on a quiet residential street, 10 minute walk to either Lawrence or York Mills subways, 24hr yonge bus, 25 minutes to downtown.

1 bedroom basement apt in a house, seperate entrance, utilities incl.

Rent $620.

It's a fucking steal!

that is a great price considering the location and with everything included.

i live at yonge+eg in 1bedroom, $950. 17th floor overlooking south of Eg, i can see the CN Tower and even the lake. my commute is only 25min to downtown, which means compared to my coworkers that live in the boonies i shave off hours every week. imo, it's worth it to pay a little more in rent and live closer to your work.

I used to live at Yonge/Bloor....while it was nice for the convenience, I deliberately moved OUT of the core. Much nicer to live in a quiet area and make the trek downtown when need be, imo.

I live in Mississauga and it takes me 22 minutes to get downtown via the Go Train.

It all depends where you live in proximity to Public transportation...

It also depends on whether you have to pay for go_transit AND subway/TTC.

If an average TA had a choice of paying 1000 for 1 bedroom in Missisauga, vs 1200 for 1 bedroom somewhere in the dt-core, I think that average TA would choose 'sauga.

Many people don't consider the costs to pay when using GO. I think a trip from somewhere in 'Sauga on a monthly basis is around $120, no? All of a sudden, the difference between downtown and boonies is only $80 - not bad. Factor in the fact that in the dt-core you can actively take the subway anywhere, and don't need to own a car at all, and it somehow actually works out to be the same or cheaper than living in the boonies. Why? Because downtown, you can purchase a monthly TTC pass and use it throughout. In 'Sauga, you must own a car. I really don't know anybody there that is able to get away without using a car at least twice a week.

Anyways, that's the rationale I used when buying a place in KingWest, as opposed to somewhere in North York or Etobicoke.

PS. Still have my car though, but that's b/c I bought it outright 3 years ago, and I don't have any significant costs associated with keeping it.

EDIT: I think $120 for go-transit monthly pass is a bit on the cheaper side too. Probably closer to $140-$160, no? I don't know...

it's true .. there are a lot of cost savings when you factor in overhead costs of travel. while at the same time your property taxes and insurance living in the 416 are sometimes likely to be higher than in the 905.

ultimately whether or not it's more expensive to live downtown i think most people understand that they are paying for a lifestyle when they choose to live there.
