When we first got our dog long ago North Shore was a mob scene and almost all the pets were taken when we got there. Someone directed us to a local animal shelter a few blocks away and we got our dog there. He wasn't a puppy but he was still a great dog nonetheless.

They are the fucking WORST.
They'll eat EVERYTHING, like your cellphone, eyeglasses, soap, etc, etc, etc. A friend of mine has to put her eyeglasses under her mattress, lol.
You absolutely must have a big garden for them to run in, otherwise, they'll destroy your house.

And training doesn't really help that much except for housebreaking.

rescuing a dog is nice but in my opinion you'll pay for it in vet bills. pick a quality breed that you like and make sure you go to a reputable breeder (one that is involved in dog shows and whatnot) to pick up a purebred pup. Purebreds, depending on the breeder, can come with a certified bill of health; this will save you a lot of trouble later dealing with vet fees.

I myself bought a female Akita from a great breeder, I couldn't have asked for a better dog. She was already 2 when we got her, very well behaved and house trained etc.

Akitas are cool dogs. My wife just made a movie about an Akita ( look out for "Hachiko" starring Richard Gere). It's a great story.

I have a min pin/chihuahua x, but he looks more like a min pin which looks is very similar to a doberman (but only 10"). People who see him call him the mini doberman, his tail is docked as well, but not as much as it normally would be.

It is nice to have a small dog cuz he is very portable for me and I live in a condo, so he can get his exercise indoors if the weather isn't great outside. Mine doesn't have any maintenance like a Yorkie does though (ie: grooming every 6 wks), he just has his basic care.
