I can't wait for the day compressed music dies and we are all back to listening to WAV-quality music via downloads. Storage and net speeds are ever increasing, but seeing how slowely the music industry moves sometimes...

Couldn't tell the difference - but I do have shitty speakers right now and this sort of music isn't exactly the sound my ears are used to.

I put in my senn hd's and had to listen a few times before I knew which one it was, and even then I couldn't tell by the voice. The instrumentals were the giveaway.

It was a tricky clip.

Couldn't tell the difference. I think it'd be easier to tell in dance music, as the hi-hats and such distort.

And as they said the sound recording on the 128 was worse. Aren't they supposed to be the same thing? I find its easiest to hear low bitrate with pads/strings and really melodious stuff and such. As well as deep bass. Even if I can't tell the first time the difference(although here I was tired and listening on shitty speakers)... it doesn't mean I don't enjoy the higher bitrate one more.

I got it right listening from my $50 headphones, but I had to listen a couple of times to be sure.

Plus the bass distorts somewhat and subtle rumbles are lost. Also, higher quality tracks sound noticeably fuller.

i got it wrong with my not so good speakers that aren't positioned optimally for listening at the computer. my gf was also doing some stuff that makes noise while i listened. gotta try with headphones later on and concentrate really well.

i would have thought i'd hear the difference easily. guess not then.

and i agree with people saying, that there should be a site with lots of samples of different music and it should give you statistics afterwards. would be cool to know how much of a difference different compressions actually make.

Telling different bitrates apart also heavily depends on the encoder used. For example, ancient Xing MP3 encoder or even L3Enc by Fhg sounds sh*tty at any given bitrate, while the latest LAME builds make it really difficult, especially with electronic music.
